Colorado sweeps San Diego

Post by jacktoast »

The Colorado Grizzlies swept their San Diego Padres to move into sole possession of first place in the National League. The Grizzlies have gone 7-3 in their last ten games and are on a three game winning streak. The Grizzlies posted two walk off wins in the series.

Paul McGhee hit two homers and went four for ten in the series, Tony Gwynn was 4 for 11 for San Diego.

Colorado's Glenn Gardner went nine innings for his 5th win in game one and Derek Walker got the win in game two thanks to Carlton Moore's walk off singe that scored McGhee.

Game three would be a similar result with a few different main characters involved.

Right handers Gil Crespi for Colorado and Joey Lucchesi for the visitors were the srtarting pitchers.

Colorado mounted a threat in the first inning but did not score. Lucchesi walked lead off man Gil Mota an the second batter, Guillermo Almeida, reached on an infield single putting runners on firsrt and second with no one out. Lucchesi cooled off considerable in this game holding him hitless (0-3) got a big strike out for the first out. Moore bounced out to third and Mike Garner grounded out to shortstop to strand two runners.

Crespi was in control also not giving up a hit until Cristian Villanueva singled with one out in the 3rd. Lucchesi would have a hard time with bunts in this game, bounced an agttempt bsck to Crespi who threw to McGhe to start a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Colorado got Guillermo Almeida on with one out in the 3rd but Lucchesi wiggled out of that by getting the next two out very routinely.

San Diego took a 2-0 lead in the 5th.

Eric Hosmer walked. Gwynn singled just past second baseman Harlin Donlin amd Franchy Cordero singled to right field driving in Hosmer.'Gwynn reached thrid basewhere he scored from on Manny Morgot's single to right field. Villaneuva struck out and Luchessi bunted into another 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.

The big play by Crespi gave Colorado the momentum. Lucchesi walked catcher Luis Fuentes. Fuentes surprised the Padres by stealing second base. Crespi's bunt advanced him to thrid with one out. Mota drove him in with a single to right field.

2-1 San Diego

Harlin Donlin's second homerun of the season tiedthe score 2-2 in the 6th. Colorado had a chance for more when R.J. Renolds singled. Tony Gwynn saved tha Padres with a great catch in right field.

2-2 after six innings and no more scoring until the bottom of the 9th and what happened might have stirred up some bad memories for the Padres from game two.

Pinch hitter Curt Kremmel pinch hit for winning pitcher Rotsen Ellaf Jr. and doubled. John Guerin, a defensive replacement in the outfield in the 7th inning came up for the first time snd singled in the winning run.

WALK OFF FINAL 3-2 Colorado.
