Colorado 8 Brooklyn 7

Game two.

George Cunningham called up to replace Eric Hooper in the starting rotation made his major league debut. The twenty-three year old right hander drafted 80th in the 2nd round of the 1950 draft has made great strides in the minors for Colorado and will be pushing someone for a permanent spot on the major league staff very soon. Cunningham was farmed back out when Colorado activated starting pitcher Dave Holman from the disabled list.

Cunningham suffering from a bit of rookie nerves allowed a single in the first inning by Snipe Stephenson, but no runs.

Art Matchick, the Brooklyn starter, got into immediate trouble in the first inning and it was not from rookie nerves. Gil Mota, one of the leagues best lead off men, singled. Guillermo Almeida and Paul McGhee both walked to load the bases. Carlton Moore grounded to shortstop with two strikes on him getting the first run of the game in. 1-0 Colorado. Harlin Donlin singled and Mike Garner hit a grand slam homerun to make it 5-0 Colorado.

In the Brooklyn 3rd Benny Nietzke singled, Bill Maisel walked and Snipe Stephenson triples to make the score 5-2.

Almeida reached on an error by relief pitcher Maurice Hosley and Carlton Moore blasted a two run homerun.

7-2 Colorado.

The rookie ran into trouble in the 6th. Phil Bedrosian led off with a double. Pat Bennett flied out to Moore in right field. Cunningham continued to crumble walking Tom Arlin. Hosley bunted successfully moving the runners up 90 feet. Nietzke's single to right field scored Bedrosian and Arlin. Bud Maisel doubled to right field Nietzke scored.

7-5 Colorado.

Cunningham gave up three hits three runs walked four struck out five.

Derek Walker (2-1 5.27 in 13 games) came in badly in need of a good outing. Walker got the final out of that inning.

Hosley continued to pitch for Brooklyn and did not allow a run or a hit in 2.1 innings,

Walker also went 2.1 innings and did not allow a run as well.

Hosley turned things over to Buck Kranepool in the 8th.

Donlin doubled off Kranepool, pinch hitter Curt Kremmel reached on an error by Wunch at second putting runners on fiorst and third. Donlin scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Anthony Fox.

8-5 Colorado

Casey Hayworth gave up a two run homder to Strick Wunch in the 9th but got through the inning with the lead and earened his 9th save.

Final 8-7 Colorado.

Brooklyn 4 Colorado 2

Game three

10 Innings

Broolyn won this series 2-1 by winning two extra inning games in Colorado, 8-4 in 11 innings and 4-2 in 10 innings.

Colorado took the middle game behind rookie George Cunningham 8-7. Shooty Camacho the second of three pitchers used by Brooklyn got the win. (4-1 3.00 ERA)

Jeff Stewart (5-2 3.38 ERA) started and wenrt seven innings but did not figure in the decision. Stewart allowed nine hits and two runs over seven innings walkedthree and had four strikeouts.

Art Cusick of Brooklyn camecinto the game 6-0 with a 2.88 ERA. Cusick game up four hits and two riuns over seven innings issued two walks and had two strikeouts.

Cusick got burned for two runs in the first inning. on three hits. Lead-off man Gil Mota singled and stole his 18tyh base, most in the league. Almeida advanced him to third base with a grounder to second base. Mota tagged p and scored on a fly ball by Paul McGhee. Carlton more picked on a hanging curveball and doubled, then scored on the secodn double of the inning for Coloado by Harlin Donlin.

Brroklyn came back with one in the 6th to break up Stewart's shutout. Andy Gumbert singled and scored on a RB double by Phil Bedrosian. 2-1 Colorado.

Brooklyn tied the game 2-2 in the 8th inning.

Bedroasian tripled bringing Stewart's day to a close, replaced by left hander Retson Ellaf Jr., who allowed the inherited runner to score on a single by Pat Bennett.

Camacho worked a scoreless 8th and 9th for Brooklyn.

Casey Hayworth came in and pitched a scoreless 9th for Colorado.

Hayworth trying to pitch two innings ran into trouble in the top of the 10th. Gumbert singled to center field with no outs and then when Haywoirth ignored him at first base, he stole second base.Pat Bennett came through with his second big hit of the game driving in his second run putting his team on top. George Geiger came in and was tagged for an insurance run scored by Bennett on a Taylor Otis RBI single.

Hank Sweetland finished off the Gizzlies as a disappointed home crowd headed for the exits. It was save number ten for Sweetland.

Colorado 4 Los Angeles 3

The Grizzlies began a three game series in Los Angeles with a 4-3 win.

The Colorado starting pitcher in the opener was Glenn Grdner, 6-4 in 11 starts, with one no decision, and a 2.78 ERA (24 earned runs in 77.2 innings pitched). The opposition is bating .240 off him with 3 homeruns.

Derek Wilson, 6-2 1.89 in 11 stats with two complete games, 90 inniings pitched one homerun alled and opponants are batting just .171 against him (54 hits in 316 at bats), started foir the home team.


Wilson allowed a first inning sinfgel to Paul McGhee who was caught steal, recorded one strikewout and looked very sharp.

Gardner allowed allow a first inning single to Hugh Schetchley but struck out Steve Merritt to end the inning with no damage done.

Colorado got to Wilson in the 2nd inning. Wilson hurt himself with a walk to Donlin to start the inning. Bill Mackinson singled just past the diving effort of second baseman Heinie Armbruster, Donlin went to third base.

Curt Kremmel singled to right field driving in Donlin. Mackinson sped around to third. Mackinson scored on a double play hit into by Almeida. 2-0 Colorado.

Armbruster doubled to right field off Gardner in the 3rd and scord on a single by Bud Saucier to cut the lead in half.

2-1 Colorado.

A walk in the 4th hurt Wilson again. Wilson walked Kremmel with one out. Kremmel stole second AND third base and scored on a ground out by Almeida.

Curt Kremmel (two for three with a walk in the game) doubled with two outs and scored his second run of the game on Guillermo Almeida's second RBI hit of the game to make the score 4-1.

The run was all important because Eric Hooper surrendered a two run homerun to hugh Sketchley in the 9th inning. Hooper game up two runs on two hits but manged to earn his second save out of the bullpen.

Hooper has allowed six homeruns in 42 innings and opponants are hitting .230 agaisnt him.

Colorado, 28-18 ten games over.500, is 7-3 over its last ten games and four games in front of four teams tied at 24-22.

Pittsburgh, St. Lous, San Francisco, and San Diego are in a four way tie for second place.

Pittsburgh defeated Philadelphia 10-7 gettiscoring ten runs on fourteen hits.

San Dieigo knocked off St Louis 3-2.

Broolyn won its 8th in its last ten with a 10-3 crushing of San Francisco.
