Two baseball teams were in search of sweeps to better their standing and both succeeded in getting them.

The Philadelphia Brawlers swept the Pittsburgh Pirates by scores of 6-5, 5-4 in 11 innings, and 10-5 to knock Pittsburgh out of first place and the Milwaukee Mustangs swept the San Francisco Golden Goblets 7-6, 7-0 and 5-3 to move into a tie for second with Pittsburgh who have lost four straight. Both Philadelphia and Milwaukee have won four straight.

Howie Rogers, the Mustang starting pitcher had a difficult first inning giving up one run on one hit. Rabbit Garciaparra singled and stole second base. Rogers walked Snapper King, while King was batting Garciaparra swiped third base. King missed the steal sign and failed to follow Garciaparra in a double steal. He tried to make up for it but was caught stealing on a pitchout. Rolando Wojcik popped out to third baseman Benny Castro in foul territory. A passed ball on catcher Gordy Phillips allowed Garciaparra to score. 1-0 San Francisco.

Milwaukee got things rolling in the 2nd inning. Phillips singled to right field. Simmons walked Ralph Pettit. Roland Sproull grounded out to second baseman Ossie Henley..both runners advanced to second and third. Castro bounced out to the pitcher..no advance by the runners and now there were two outs. Mel Rineer singled in both runners to put Milwaukee in front 2-1.

Rogers put up five shutout innings from the 2nd through the 6th innings allowing only two singles and posting four of his six punch outs.

The recent power surge by Milwaukee continued in this game. Roland Sproull hit the first of two homeruns he would have in this game in the 4th inning with one on and no outs. 4-1 Mustangs.

Sproull hit his second homerun and 5th of the season in the 6th inning with one out and no one on. Both came off Hal Simmons who has given up 7 now. 5-1 Mustangs.

Rogers went 8 full innings gave up 6 hits and wo runs walked one and struck out six. he is 6-1 w/a 4.01 ERA now.

Charlie Blue took over mound duties in the 9th inning and did pick up his 8th save despite giving up an infield single to Snapper King. leading of the inning. Wojcik struck out. Fryman grounded out to Pettit at first base. King to second. King scored on Ossie Henley's single to left field. Blue struck out Hal Nourse to end the game.

Milwaukee and Pittsburgh now will face off in the Steel City for a battle for second place. Milwaukee will give the ball to Right hander Dan Ross, 4-6 w/a 4.59 ERA and he will be opposed by a lefthander Forrest Trautman, 7-6 3.13.

Philadelphia will travel to Houston for a three game set. Lefthander Jamie Moyer, 4-4 3.58 and right hander Neil Andrus will square off in game one of that series.
