Baltimore 9 Anaheim 8

10 Innings

Terrific battle in Baltimore between the two two clubs in the league as Baltimore evened their series with Anaheim with a ten inning victory over the second place A's. Anaheim took game one in ten inning 3-2 in ten innings as well. The two extra inning games give Baltimore three extra inning games in their last four games. The o's are 1-2 in those three games.

The win gave Baltimore a two game advantage over Anaheim going into the rubber game of the series.

Reliever Roy McQuillan, the fifth of five pitchers used by Baltimore, got the win (1-0). Myrl Otero (0-1, pitcher number six for Anaheim got tagged with the loss in extra innings.

Baltimore took an early lead in the bottom of the 3rd on two hits and a walk. Randy Massey had a lead off single and a stolen base. Anaheim starting pitcher Sam Wilson walked Masahito Tanaka and a run scoring single by catcher Otto Miller.

Anaheim retaliated with four runs in the top of the 4th to take a 4-1 lead.

Baltimore stater Otto Mills walked Rudy Baldwin with one out. Eduardo Phillips singled to right sending Baldwin to third base where he scored on a single to right by Bill Mahady. Mills walked Rob Cramer to load the base. Phillips came in to score on a ground out by Smith (2-1). The other advanced to second and third. Jack Pauxtis singled past shortstop scoring Mahady and Cramer, 4-1 Anaheim.

Back to back one hot homeruns by Howie Banks (2nd) and Jeff Cusick (4th) cut the lead to one, 4-3.

Anaheim got those two runs right back in the 5th on a two run homerun by Mahady (4th) to up the score to 6-3.

The Orioles took a turn at coming back in the bottom of the 7th scoring two runs to make the score 6-5.

Pinch hitter Corey Carlson flied to right. Massey singled. Perry Burgos tripled into the right field corner driving in Massey.

Carden Netzel took over for Wilson in the seventh with one out. Wilson allowed five runs on eight hits. Netzel gave up the inherited runner Burgos when Miller singled.

Anaheim went ahead 8-5 in the 8th when John Robinson gave up a solo homerun to Pauxtis (3rd) and Keith Christenson scored on a sacrifice fly by Baldwin.

In the bottom of the 8th Baltimore inched to within one run (8-7). Kelly Berneir singled and stole second. Cusick walked and Pinch hitter Red Chittum doubled driving in both.

Baltimore sent the game into extra innings by scoring the tying run in the the 9th. Rookie Masahito Tanaka, was switched to shortstop from the outfield upon his recall because of an injury, His bat has come alive with his becoming more comfortable at the position. Tanaka lined a clutch two out double to left field and scored on Otto Miller's third hit (and third RBI) of the game.

Pinch hitter Charlie Smith drove in the winning run with two out scoring Carl Roberts who had singled and stolen second base.
