SEATTLE 4 WASHINTON 2

Seattle ace Mike Mauch won his eigth straight decision going eight innings giving up six hits and two runs with seven strikeouts and three walks. Mauch led the American League in wins (8) and ERA (1.84).

Washington lost its third straight game dropping them three games behind Boston. The Sailers rose about the .500 mark (19-18) with their secoind straight win.

Mauch put the Sailers in front in the sedcond inning with a two out single that scored Dick Goldman who had doubled off losing pitcher Bobby Salmon.

Jim Lynch had a run socring single and Bill Zahn hit a two run homerun off Salmon in the bottom of the 8th inning, the 6th for Zahn and the 7th round trippers given up by Salmon in 64 innings pitched.

John Kohdat hit his 8th homerun of the season in the 9th off Mauch (2nd allowed in 63.2IP) in the 9th inning bringing on Herm Rosenthahl for the final two out outs. Rosenthahl picked up his first save and recorded two stikeouts.

YANKEES 2 CHOPPERS 1

Last place New York edged Baltimore 2-1 in Baltimore scoring two runs in the ninth inning off Tony Scanlon Two pinch hitters came through for the Yankees with two outs in the inning. Jerry Leach had a big two out pinch hit single to left field and a second pinch hitter Bill Merritt doubled past left fielder Ted Godwin to score Leach with the tying run.

Davey Worstler replaced Scanlon and gave up the game winning hit, a single to right field by Ted Alcala.

Chris Ostendorf (5-3) went 1.1 innings in relief of starter Terry Maloy (6.2 6H 1R/1ER 2BB/5SO) for the win and Jerome Jordon struck out two in the 9th for his 2nd save.

TEXAS 3 LOS ANGELES 2

Babe Dowse, the winning pitcher, (1-2) blew a 1-0 lead to the consternation of starting pitcher Willis LaCorte (3-2 2.84) who gave up five hits in seven and a third innings allowing five hits and two runs with three walks and six strikeouts.

LaCorte confronted Dowse in the dugout at the end of the inning with the two swinging wildly at each other and each landing a couple of good shots on the other before they were separated by coaches and other players.

All was made good hopefully when Texas rallied in the bottom of the 9th to win. (Well maybe .. bruised pride heals slowly.)

Bill Campbell led off with a walk and was pinch run for by Icehouse Shaw. Shaw made it to third base on a single by Danny McCormick. Shaw scored on a sacrifice fly by Ren Hall.

BOSTON 5 Anaheim 3

Boston rebounded from a loss in their final game in Seattle with another win at home where the WhippoorWills are 12-4. Paul Maguire stipped the one game losing streak improving his record 5-2 recording eight innings giving up seven hits nad three runs walking three and striking out four.

Anaheim was the team doing all the scoring early.scoring foirst in the top of the 3rd inning on Ryan AlDean seventh homerun. It was the third allowed by McGuire in71.1 innings pitched. Opponants are batting just .180 off McGuire (45 for 250).

Anaheim doubled their lead to 2-0. Daveayboy Roberts singled and stole second and scored on Spencer Edwin's RBI single to right field.

Anaheim made it 3-0 in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by AlDean.

Boston exploded for five runs in the seventh inning. Jansen grounded to shortstop. Rick Locklear Jake Plummer both followed with singles. Stan McGeary walked to load the bases. Ethan Taneyhill drove in Locklear and Plummer...(3-2)

Steve Maguire's single to centerifeld tied the score 3-3.

Dave Scudder flied out to centerfield. Leon Radski walked to load the bases.

Jackson took over for Anaheim.

Charlie Smith singled to right filed driving in the go ahead run. Don Jones picked up his 12th save.
