Righthander Rod Sewell (6-3) went nine shutout innings, limiting the Yankees to just three hits while walking two and striking out five to give Boston its second straight win after the team snapped a four game losing streak to salvage one game of that series at home against the Dogers, 8-6 behind Marv Rybakowski who is now 6-1.

Boston jumped all over New York starter, Luis Ritter (1-8), for all run of its runs on eight hits over 6.2 innings.

Ritter gave up a two out single by Lee Taneyhill in the 4th, then walked Dave Scudder, and catcher Brad Scurry singled in Taneyhill. 1-0 Boston.

Boston added a second run in the 5th on a double play ground out by Don Blackwell. Ritter walked the fist batter of the inning, Jack Plummer. Jed Scott's single send Scudder speeding around to third base. Blackwell grounded into a double play started by second baseman Patsy Raffo and McGeary grounded out to Raffo to end the inning.

Two RBI doubles in the 7th inning, by Blackwell and McGeary accounted for the final two Boston runs.

Boston is 32-17 (.653) two games in front of Washington and Anaheim both 30-19 (.612)

WASHINGTON 10 LOS ANGELES 7

Washington has made an impressive recovery from a bad stretch in August, when the team lost ten of thirteen games, from August 8 to August 22, to fall out of first place, where it resided at the start of the slump, down into fourth place.

After defeating Texas twice, and sweeping New York in a three game series, Washington opened a series with the Los Angeles Dogers coming away with a 10-7 victory in a slugfest.

John Stricklett (3-0) picked up his second win in the series, both in relief, by going 3.1 innings (3 hits 1 run). Stricklett took over from starting pitcher Bobby Salmon, knocked out of the game after just 3.2 innings giving up six runs on nine hits.

Salmon gave up a lead off homerun in the bottom of the first to Alan Brown. Los Angeles added two more runs in the inning on a RBI single by Grant Madlock and a sacrifice fly by Bill Gordon.

Brown reached on an infield single in the third, stole his sixth base of the season, and scored on a double by Jason Clause. 4-1 Texas.

Washington scored one run in the top of the 4th inning on a double by Joe Murphy, to close to within two, 4-2 then fell behind 6-2 aftet Los Angeles added two runs in the bottom of the 4th when the exploded for two runs after there were two outs and no one on base. Salmon hit Elmer Wagner on with a 1-2 curveball. Wgner stole second base, his 6th theft of the year and Jason Clausen and Jayhawk Arlin followed with two consecutive singles scoring Wagner.

John Stricklett replaced Salmon and walked the first batter he faced, Grant Madlock. Ted Blaylock followed with asingle scoring Clausen to put Los Angeles ahead 6-2.

Washington staged a two out rally in the 5th inning to climb within one run, 6-5. The uprising was initiated by a double off the bat of George McGinn. Brian Roy singled to score him, and stole second base, his 9th of the season. Brain Barbee drove him in with a single to finish Los Angeles starter Pug Bourgue (4.2P 8H 5R/5ER 1BB/3SO).

Bobby Chapman struck out John Bryant to end the inning.

Los Angeles came right back to score a run in the botom of ther 5th on a lead off triple by Lee Magrane and a sacrifice fly by pitcher Bobby Chapman to go ahead by two; 7-5.

Lee Camnitz' lead off homerun in the top of the 6th made the score 7-6 It was Camnitz' first of the season and thecfourth off Chapman in 24 innings pitched.

Wasington salted away the game with four runs in the 8th inning coming on three homeruns. Jesse Walker (3rd) hit the first one, a two run shot off Ed Daly, and John Payne hit the second, also off Daly, (3rd and 4th allowed by Daly in just nine innings) and Brian Roy (9th) hit the third round tripper of the inning off Gordon Bowling, the 3rd off Bowling in 22 innings.

Harry Rivers picked up a save in the 9th inning for Washington, his 9th of the season.

Anaheim, winniners of seven of their last ten, lost to the Baltimote BattleAxes to fall into a second place tie with Washington.
