There is a sizzling pennant race in the early going in the American League. Three teams are within one game of first place and all are playing very well at this point of the season. Washington currently holds down the top spot at 10-3 after winning eight of its last ten. Seattle and Detroit are right on their taillights one game back (9-4).

Washington Senators 8 Baltimore 5

Washington coming off taking a three game series from Los Angeles two games to one won their third straight with a 8-5 triumph ovr Baltimore (4-9 minus 4).

The Senators starting pitching did not go deep into two of the three games of that series thus percipitation the call up of right hander Matt Bankston to give the over worked Washington bullpwn a fresh arm. Bankston made his debut with one out in the 8th inning after Sean Luplow had hit a two run homerun off Ron Conyers cutting into the Washington lead. Bankston struck out Jim Ramirez and pinch hitter Tom Ruth to keep the score at 8-5.

Conyers gave the Senators a much needed quality start going 7.1 innings allowing five runs on seven hits with just one walk and seven strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season (1-0).

Bill Bullinger, not exactly well rested homeself after picking up two saves in the final two games with LA pittched a strong ninth inning striking out two of three batters he faced for his 8th save.

Conyers issued his only walk of the game to Blatimore lead off batter Phil Drake who then stole second and scored on a single by Dave Varner to put Baltimore up 1-0.

Washington sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning scoring five runs on four hits off Hugh Beebe. Beebe also walked two in the inning 9Brito and Rodriquez) and both scored. Bob Miller had a single in the inning as did Russ Krukowski (2 RBI), Edwin Umbarger (1 RBI) and catcher Jake Washington drove in the final run with a double to center field.

5-1 Washington after one inning.

Washington added another run in the bottom of the second inning. Lead off man Dave Mahon walked, stole second, advanced to thirdon Tony Brito's ground out and scored on another ground out by Bob Miller.

6-1 Washington.

Jim Ramirez singled in POhil Drake in the 6th inning, but Umberger got that run back with a RBI single in the bottom of that Winflies and Luplow hit their homers in the 7th and 8th but Washington held on for the 8-5 win.

Texas 7 Anaheim 5

Texas scored five of their seven runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to come from behind to win thiis one.

Dan Dixon, and Darold Irvine had run scoring singles, Pablo Grace a RBI double, and Bill Wells hit a two run homerun in the big outburst.

Bill Coquillette (4) and Bill Cardinal homered for Anaheim.

Los Angeles 11 Pilots 3

The LA Gunslinger brkoe a two game losing streak by pounding Comptons Seattle Pilots 11-3. No happiness in the Compton household tomight.

Detroit 2 Oakland 0

Buddy Vaughn of Detroit shutout Oaland on five hits three walkss and had 5 strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season (1-0)>

Shawn Cunningham pitched out of a mess of his own making; a single and two walks to load the bases with one out for his 5th save.

Ramon Thompson drove in the only two runs of the game in the 7th inning off Rafe Hollister.
