Post by jacktoast »

Dodger 2 Braves 0

Dick Hertweck (2-0) allowed just one hit over eight shutout innings against the Atlanta Jlitzys off to a disappointing 2-8 start.

The only Atlanta hit was a leadoff single by Tony Ryan in the 3rd inning. Ryan advanced to second base on a one out bunt by the pitcher Byrd Belinsky but was stranded when Hertweck struck out Les Buddie to end the inning.

Hertweck recorded two strikeouts in the inning, seven in the game. Hertweck allowed seven groundouts, seven flyouts to the outfield, three pop outs and just one line drive out to record his 24 outs.

Phil Smith faced just three men in the 9th to record his fourth save of the five Dodger wins.

The Dodgers scored the only two runs of the game off Byrd Belinsky in the bottom of the 5th when first baseman Dick Macovich led off the inning with a line drive double off the base of the wall in left field. and shortstop Mark Schypinski belted his second homerun of the season to deep leftfield. It was the first homerun allowed this season by the Braves ace.

Belinsky, now 1-1, gave up eight hits walked two and struck out nine.

Brooklyn, 5-5 (.500) trails first place Cincinnati by two games and three clubs tied for second, Pittsburgh, San Diego and Philadelphia, by two.

Atlanta with one of the most talented roasters in the league, is off to a very disa[ppoiting 2-8 start.

Other scores;

Reds 14 San Diego 5

Montreal 4 SF 3

Philadelphia 7 Pittsburgh 3

Longest streaks; The Reds and PPhiladelphia both have four game winning streaks and Atlanta has lost five straight.
