BeanEaters win in extra innings

Boston has put together a streak of seven wins in their last ten games for move up among those competing for first place. The seven wins improved Boston's record to 14-11 putting them just one game behind New York, Minnesota and Los Angeles, all tied for first place, with 15-10 records.

The win in ten innings kept the BeanEaters perfect in extra innings with a 3-0 record. Minnesota remained winless in extras falling to 0-3.

The loss created the three way tie for first place with the Los Angeles Mules defeated Chicago 4-1. New York dropped a 5-2 decision to Toronto.

Reliever Scott Zepp (2-0) picked up the win (2-0 1IP 1H OR 0BB/ 2 Strikeouts) in rleeif od starting pitcher Waynew Davis (7.1 IP 8H 3R/3ER 3BB/6SO) and Elmer Relaford (1.2IP 1H 0 runs 2BB/1SO).

Boston scored two runs in the firt inning to take a 2-0 lead off Minnesota starting pitcher Ron Valdes. Valdes allowed a one out doublke to Erik Kelly. Kelly scored on a Don Anderson single. After Larry Powers walked shortstop Larry Edwards followed with a single that cored Anderson.

Davis struggled in the first inning and doid not hold the lead. Glen Lawrence led off the inning with his third homerun of the season, the first allowed by Davis in 48 innings pitched. Davis walked Joe Musselman and Jerry Freeman with one out. Valdes' bunt advanced the runners to second and third. Davis hit George Hill with a pitch to load the bases. Ron Horner singled iin Musselman and Freeman for a 3-2 Minnesota lead.

Both Davis and Valdes settled in and kepot that socre intact until the Beaneaters rallied in the ninth inning off releif pitcher Cal Henion who replaced an exhausted Valdez after the eighth inning. Valdes allowed two runs on six hits walked three and stuck out nine.

Paul Young doubled to left field. The next batter, Catcher Lou Kirby, singled to centerfield. Young tried to score on the play but was gunned down at the plate by a brilliant throw from centerfielder Jim Vache. Pinch hitter Jack Malone grounded out to shortstop Ron Horner. Both runners were able to advance on the slow roiller putting the winning run at third base.

Anderson then scored the game winner on a ground out by second baseman Earl Dowd.

Minnesota left 14 runners on base and Boston 7.
