BeanEaters off to 5-1 start

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

The Boston BeanEaters are off to a roaring 5-1 start and lead the second place Detroit Wolverines (4-2) a one game. Four teams, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Chicago and Oakland follow Detroit with 3-3 records in the early American League going.

Boston opened the season at home winning two of three from Chicago and then swept Kansas City in Kansas City taking the finale of the series 2-0.

Allen Hawkins (2-0) after two starts went 7.2 innings allowed no runs on six hits walked five which was a problem, and struck out four.

Hawkins expressed concern with the number of walks he has allowed after issuing four over eight innings in his Opening Day 6-4 win at Navy Bean Stadium over Chicago. ''Fewer walks in both games might have meant a complete game, or most certainly less work for the bullpen.'' he said. ''I will have to work on that between starts.''

Hawkins did not have a perfect inning in the game. Kansas City stranded one batter in all nine innings, eight were left on against Hawkins. Hawkins walked two in the first inning. Lead off batter Charlie Helfrich was caught stealing, catcher Ron Lytle to shortstop Ray Jutze. Andy McVey, who walked with two outs, was left on base when Donie Verban grounded out to third baseman Johnny Genevese.

Kansas City put two on in the fourth inning when Verban singled and stole second. After Rivera fouled out to catcher Ron Lytle, Hawkins walked Tim Merritt to put runners on first and second with one out. That situation ended quickly as Ed Williamson hit a one hopper to shortstop Jutze who began a 6-4-3 inning ending double play.

Hawkins walked both Ed Mierkowicz and McVey to start the eighth inning. Verban grounded into Boston's second double play, this one started started by first baseman Tim Stanicek, (3-6-3). Ronnie Jackson came in and got the final out of that inning by striking out Jim Rivera.

Five of the six hits allowed by Hawkins came with two outs. A frustrated Donie Verban said ''We just never could come up with the big hit, we got runners on then crumbled the whole game. Losing one like this is tough. We had our chances and let them get away.''

Rick Umbenhauer came on in the ninth inning to pick up his fourth save of the five Boston wins. Second baseman Fritz Lindeman made a web gem play on Tim Merritt and threw him out to start the inning. Umberhauer issued a walk to Ed Williamson, the six of the game for Boston pitching. Vida Crouch popped out to Henry Driscoll in center field and Umbenhauer struck out Claude Bennett to end the game.

Boston scored two runs on four hits all off losing pitcher Harry Slagle (1-1). Slagle went seven innings allowing two runs on four hits walked just one and struck out an impressive nine batters. Fritz France worked the final two innings for Kansas City and allowed a walked and recorded one strikeout.

Boston took the lead in the fourth inning. Tim Stanicek walked and stole both second and third base and scored on a single to center field by Larry Swanson.

Boston's second run came in the fifth inning when catcher Ron Lytle hit his fourth homerun of the season with no one one .

Lytle has four homeruns in his first ten at bats, six hits total for a .600 batting average, 2.436 OPS, .636 OBP, and 1.000 slugging percentage.

Lytle has homered off Cy Froberg of Chicago on Opening Day, 3-Finger McMahon of Chicago in game three of the season, he hit number three off of Al Babcock in game one of the Kansas City series.

Larry Siegfried. There's a name you don't see everyday.

played with #17 at both at OSU & the Celts. Bobby Knight is familiar with his game, too.

I was a Celtics fan when he was a part of that dynasty.

I always remember him playing with a wrap on his leg. Good player IMO.. great free throw shooter....And #17 ''the best number six man in the league'' was far more than that.......
