Boston stays unbeaten .. goes 2-0 in extra innings

BOSTON 4 TEXAS 3
(15 Innings)

Boston is 2-0 in extra innings. Texas is now 0-1.

The 5-0 Red Sox are the only undefeated team left in either league. Washington and New York at 4-1 have set themselves up in a great [position to contend in what looks to be a here team race at this point.

The starting pitcher for this game were Del White of Boston and Floyd McGurdy, a converted relief pitcher.

Texas picked up four of the 9 hits and scored both of the runs scored off White in the 3rd inning. Mookie Styles singled to center field. Virgil Pape flied to right field. Scott Browne struck out. Jeff Montefusco doubled, driving in Styles. Len Olsen followed with a single to right field that sent Montefusco in to score.

2-0 Texas.
Texas scored two runs on four hits and left one man on base.

Boston staged a comeback in the bottom of the 4th inning. Paul Funk flied out to center field. Bruce Hess struck out. Jesse Ryerson tripled. Julio Petry singled in Ryerson. Doug Tyson singled and stole second base. Paul Dollarhead singled in both Petry and Tyson. to put Boston in front 3-2.

Boston scored three runs on four hits, all with two outs and left 1 man on base.

Jay Ashby continued to flounder as the Boston closer blowing his second save opportunity in three chances. Ashby walked Art Walker and Wally Walker with one out and Mookie Styles grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Ashby was followed by Bill Hershey for one scoreless inning giving up one hit and one walk. Rookie Bob Edgerton pitched the 11th and 12th, allowed one hit, one walk and recorded one strikeout. Mike Vonwinkle went the final three innings for the win giving up one hit and striking out one.,

Boston got things done in the bottom of the 15th inning. Paul Funk singled to left field with one out and scored the winning run on a double by Bruce Hess off losing pitcher Rogelio Valdez.
