Game one;

Red Sox 6 Washington 3

Martin Bellinger, the number three starter in the Boston rotation, went eight innings gave up nine hits and three runs, all earned, walked one and struck out six for his 11th win against two losses. Jay Ashley took over in the ninth inning and pitched a perfect inning for his 22nd save this season.

Stephen Strasburg (3-10) took the loss going eight innings allowing seven hits and six runs gave up three walks and struck out nine.

Washington took a 2-0 lead on Ripper Collins (7th) solo homerun in the first inning and a run scoring single by Duke Sims in the second.

Boston had the first of two three run innings in the game in the 2nd inning. Paul Funk singled to start the inning. Bruce Hess was called out on strikes on an arguable call. Tony Hawkins beat out a bunt for a hit, Funk advanced to second base. Rod O'Bryan singled to centerfield driving in Funk from second. Funk challenged the arm of center fielder Vladimer Guerreo. O'Bryan stole second, went to third on a throwing error on catcher Duke Sims, Hawkins scored from third on the throw. Catcher Bob Bunker's groundball to first man Lyman Bostick scored O'Bryan. 3-2 Boston

Boston's second three run inning, the 8th, began Brett Johnston striking out. Jeff Combs singled and stole second base. Larry Grimshaw walked and Paul Funk singled home Combs. Grimshaw advanced to third base and scored on a ground out by Bruce Hess. Tony Hawkins drove in Grimshaw with Boston's sixth run of the game to put the score at Boston 6 Washington 2.

Duke Sims' ninth inning solo homerun (his 7th) off Bellinger was, the second of the game off Bellinger and the 9th this season in 117.2 innings pitched. The final score was Boston 6 Washington 3.

Second game; Boston 6 Washington 1

Boston improved to 39-22 and moved into a tie with Toronto for second place, handing Washington its fourth straight loss in this important series for both clubs.

Harry Malarky snapped a personal two game losing streak by going 6.2 innings giving up no runs on two hits with six strikeouts. Rob Heath came in with two outs and two on via an error and a single and got a inning inning force out off the bat of Vlad Guerreo. Bob Edgerton pitched the final two innings giving up a two out 8th inning single to Compton Jr, walked Compton Sr, and a run scoring single to Jimmie Foxx. Ripper Collins flied out to end the inning.

Boston scored its first run in the first inning off Washington starting pitcher Juan Marichal. Brett Johnston walked, stole second, and went to third on the second throwing error of the series by catcher Duke Sims. Johnston scored two pitches later on a ground out by Julio Petry. 1-0 Boston.

In the Boston half of the fourth inning Larry Grimshaw doubled to left field. Marichal struck out both Paul Funk and Bruce Hess. Mike Keeton's single drove in Grimshaw before Les Hollandsworth flied out to right field. 2-0 Boston.

The sixth inning was another scoring inning for Boston. Petry walked with no one out. Grimshaw doubled to center field scoring Petry. Funk flied out to Foxx in right. Grimshaw was caught stealing third base; Sims to Compton Sr. Bruce Hess singled but Keeton fly to leftfielder Ripper Collins stranded the runner. 3-0 Boston.

In the seventh Marichal walked Les Hollandsworth, who was caught stealing second; Sims to second baseman Jesus Ibarra. Catcher Paul Dollarhead flied to riught field Jimmie Foxx. Rod O'Bryan hit a solo homerun (2nd), the 9th hit off Marichal. 4-0 Boston.

Boston got back to back homeruns from Julio Petry (5th) and Larry Grimshaw (12) in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Jimmie Foxx singled home Compton Jr. in the Washington half of the ninth inning to make the final score 6-1 Boston.

Boston at 40-32 is three games behind first place Los Angeles with nine games left in the regular season. Toronto who has lost three straight and Washington losers of five straight have 39-33 records four games behind Los Angeles as the season drifts into knuckle crunching time.

Boston completed the sweep with a 10-0 thumping of Compton's Senators getting a third straight good pitching effort by their starting pitcher. Dalton Kelly (6-3) went nine innings for a four hit shutout with no walks and just two strikeouts. Kelly had nine ground ball out, 8 fly ball to the outfield putouts and five pop ups, all caught by second baseman Les Hollandsworth, and two putouts by the catcher on the strikeouts.

Boston had two three run homeruns in the game and one solo for seven of their ten runs. Catcher Paul Dollarhead hit a three run homerun in the 2nd inning and left fielder Paul Funk had the other three run shot in the 3rd was hit by Paul Funk. Larry Grimshaw hit a solo homerun in the 4th to put the score at 7-0. All three came off Washington starting pitcher Denny McLain (9-4).

A two run double by Dollarhead made it 9-0 in the 6th inning and Rod O'Bryan's RBI single in the 7th made it 10-0.
