Washington outfights Anaheim for 3-1 win

Post by chriscrowder25 »

Two very good pitchers and some outstanding defensive [play were on stage for this opener of a three game series in Anaheim.

Left hander Billy Rincon got the ball for the home team and right hander Doug Garrett for the men from Washington.

In the bottom of the first inning Garrett had to pitch around a lead off single by Anaheim center fielder Jiggs Campbell and a two base throwing error by shortstop Carl Stoops putting Campbell on third base and catcher Ruben Martin on second with no one out.

The key play to Garrett's escaping unscored on was the next batter Stub Biggio hitting a medium range fly ball to Dick Backman in center field for Washington and the runner on third base not challenging his arm. Garrett struck out the next batter, Garland McCracken and then Lloyd Bosclair flied out to Backman to end the inning.

Backman had seven putouts during this game.

Anaheim showed off some leather of their won in the top of the second inning thwarting some aggressive Washington base running.

Backman singled to left field. Rincon struck out Luis Trevino. Backman stole second base. Albert Barron singled to left field and left fielder Warren Viau threw out Backman at the plate. Barron was caught stealing by catcher Ruben Martin, one of five would be base stealers who threw out in this game.

Washington took a turn at playing good defense in the bottom of the 3rd inning.

Rincon, the pitcher, singled to start the inning. Jiggs Campbell hit a ball deep in the shortstop hole fielded by Stoops and turned into a 6-4-3 double play.

Washington's aggressive base running paid some dividends in the top of the 4th inning.

Stoops doubled and Rincon walked Matt Gaines with no one out. Jack Jones' excuse me swing resulted in a slow dribbler back to the mound that still managed to advance both runners to second and third Dick Backman singled in both runners.

2-0 Washington.

Anaheim scored a run to cut the lead in half in the 4th on a double by Boisclair and an error on leftfielder Matt Gaines, the second error for Washington in this otherwise well played defensive game for both sides.

2-1 Washington,

Washington threatened but did not score in the 6th. Good defense played a role again.

Pitcher Doug Garrett contributed a single to the eleven hit Washington attack. Rincon struck out Stoops. Gaines forced Garrett at second base for the second out. Jack Jones singled to left field sending Gaines to third base. The inning ended with Ruben Martin nailing his thrid base runner of the game, Jones.

in the 7th Washington finally got to Rincon for an insurance run.

Backman singled (three for three with a walk a stolen base and two runs batted in in addition to his seven putouts in center field.) Stoops flied out right field; one out. Pinch hitter Stan Jackson singled sending Backman speeding around to third base. Another pinch hitter, Randy Hubbard, singled home Backman but Jackson was thrown out at third base by left fielder Lloyd Boisclair giving each Anaheim outfielder an assist in the game.

Rincon left after eight innings; losing pitcher (0-1) ... 8 Innings Pitched 11 Hits 3 R/33 ER 1 BB/5 SO.

Dee Duffie worked a scoreless top of the 9th for Anaheim.

Garrett also exited after eight succesful innings allowing only four hits and one run, (unearned) did not issue a walk and recorded seven strikeouts. His record is now 2-0 after Brandon Sullivan pitched a clean ninth inning for his 6th save of the seven Washington wins.
