AL Baseball Scores Washington wins its seventh straight

First place Kansas City dropped game two of their series with Los Angeles 4-1 and fell into a tie with streaking Washington for first place.

Salty York, the second of three pitchers used by the Rattlers, got the win (2-0).

Bobby Mayne hit a wo run homerun for Los Angeles in their three run 8th to break a 1-1 tie. Daryl Luck drop in a run in the inning with a single. giving the Monarchs a 3-1 lead

Fred White picked up his 8th save.

Washington 2 Detroit 1 ….. Ten Innings


Seldom used left hander Tom Davis pitched two scoreless innings in relief of starter Rich Wakefield (7IP 5H 1R/1ER 1BB/7SO) and got the win.

Brandon Sullivan came in to pitch the tenth. Sullivan struck out two and walked one to earn his 14th save, fourth in the seven game winning streak Washington is on..

Paul Houck, the losing pitcher in this game, went nine plus innings giving up two runs on seven hits. Washington scored a run in the third inning off Houck to take a 1-0 lead.

Carl Stoops singled to right field with two outs. Stan Jackson followed with a double that scored Stoops.


Houck settled in nicely and held Washington scoreless until the ninth. Detroit tied the game 1-1 in the sixth. Nick Cunningham led off the inning with a double . Two outs later he scored on a single by Ray Webster.


Houck started the tenth inning and struck out the first batter, Jack jones, for his eighth strikeout then ran out of gas. Dick Backman singled to left field. Alex Gumpert doubled. Backman scored from first challenging the A- arm of center fielder Bill Fernandez to score the go-ahead run.

Ray Bush replaced Houck to get the final two outs of the inning.

Sullivan struck out the first two batters then walked Cunningham. Sullivan earned the save by getting Horacio Humphrey to hit into a force out at second to end the game.

Boston 11 Anaheim 3

Boston had eleven runs on ten hits.

Two of Boston's hits were homeruns by Walter Royer (4th). Royer drove in three runs with two hits in the game. jerry Cook drove in four runs with a two hit game and Joe Newman went three for three scored three times and had two RBI.

Luis Tiant was the winning pitcher (2-4). Tiant tossed eight innings gave up eight hits and two runs, did not walk a batter while striking out four.


Seattle defeated Oakland 5-3.
