Love the new OT, but...

Post by blakjakshalak »

There is a conflict in the game logic that needs to be addressed. In the Marcus Allen League today there was a tie game between New England and Pittsburgh. In overtime, NE received the kick, drove down the field and kicked a FG. Pitt took the ensuing drive down the field and had 1st and 10 on the NE 11 yard line with 8 minutes and change left. At that point the rule governing overtime field goals took effect which says, "During overtime, on any down, if within X yards of the goal line and the estimated chance of making a field goal is at least X%, attempt a field goal." Pitt kicked the FG on 1st down and tied the game rather than trying to score a TD to win the game. NE won on their next drive.

The overtime kick rule as written only works in a sudden death situation. The trailing team needs to have the opportunity to win the game on their first possession if possible.

The OT play-by-play is below.
