Washington Sweeps Anaheim

Washington will go into their big series with first place Tampa Bay fresh off a sweep of the Anaheim Aces, out scoring the Aces 20-7 over the three game set.

The Senators took the opener 6-1 behind Bill McElveen (4-3 3.88). McElveen pitched seven and two third innings scattering ten hits, giving up just one run, walking one and striking out five. Bill Carreon earned his first save by getting the last four outs while striking out one and walking one.

Washington lost right fielder Charlie Gosger for at least two weeks when he suffered a rib injury while batting. Gosger went one for two. He doubled in the seond driving in Ted Mrick and walked, stole second, and scored in the sixth inning.

In game two newly acquired catcher Mike Swann made his debut with the team a successful one by going three for three, scoring two runs and working well with Senators starter Syd Yardell.

Yardell (1-3) picked up his first victory of the season by going all nine innings allowing one run on five hits striking out five and walking three.

Washington ace Myles Chapman started the finale but did not have his best outing going just five and a third innings giving uo four runs on eight hits walked two and struck out five.

Right hander Adam Embry got the win (2-1) after getting the final two outs in the sixth inning. The Senators then scored three runs in the top of the seventh.

Lead of batter Jay Holm singled to right field Pinch hitter Jim Arias drew a walk off losing pitcher Rick Paepke (2-3). Orie Bosley singled to right field driving in Holm. Myrick flied out to right field after a long ten pitch at bat.

Righthander Joe Phillips replaced Paepke and was rudely greeted by Marshall Smallwood, who doubled in Arias and Bosley.

Washington scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to off set a Anaheim run in the eight. Pinch hitter Ben Holley homered in the eighth, his second of the season and Myls Pezzullo had a RBI single in the ninth.

Willie Fischer picked up his tenth save by pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Fischer allowed a lead off single to Buck Peters followed by a four pitch walk t Jack Javery. Fred Kinney advanced both runners with a slow roller to second. Fischer then hunkered down and got Deke Walker to pop out to third baseman Jim Sparks, and Greg Estrella to ground out to the shortstop Jay Holm.

The upcoming series with first place Tampa Bay starters are; RH Dave Crone (3-2 3.53) opposing Left hander John Collins (1-2 10.00) in game one. Right hander Jeff Walter (4-4 3.53) and righthander Vallie Force (5-2 2.74 will toe the rubber in game two. The final matchup in game three is lefty Bill McElveen (4-3 3.88) against righthander Dave Pratt (5-3 4.11)
