Bucky Harris League doormat Stingrays have come alive

Post by basilrathbonejr »

A quick run down of the Bucky Harris League standings shows the St Louis Stars shining brightly over the league with a 18-8 record three games better than both Brooklyn and Milwaukee (15-11).

New York (13-13 -5), Pittsburgh and San Francisco are both 12-14 -6, and Florida after wining four straight is now 10-16 -7 and out of the cellar one game better than 9-17 -9 Montreal, loser of four straight while Florida has won four straight and four of five since the club was sold.

The Stingrays have suddenly been the recipients of good pitching and a much improved bullpen with the addition of right hander Henry Downing.

Both Larry Thomas (complete game win) and Juan Escobar (four hit shutout for seven innings) have given the Rays great starting pitching while Downing, former closer Jim Coffman and Eugenio Diaz have had outstanding efforts out of the bullpen.

Florida defeated New York 8-3 in game one with Thomas going the distance for the victory and they came back in game two to win a hotly contested affair 9-6.

Newly acquired Leslie Witting hit a two out base empty homerun in the first inning for Florida. (1-0 Rays)

Former Stingray third baseman Al Wolfe singled in the tying run driving in Bill Barker who had doubled.

Florida starting pitcher Larry Terwilliger singled with one out in the bottom of the third inning and came around to score on Jeff Garchetti's triple. Phillip Crowder singled in Garchetti with a liner to right center field.

3-1 Florida.

Wolfe played the villain again in the 4th inning driving in Spencer Sellers with a single to tighten the score at 3-2 Florida.

Homeruns became the fad for the remainder of the game. Sellers hit the first of two for him in the 7th with one on to put New York in front 4-3.

In the bottom of that inning the Stingrays had their biggest inning in some time sending eight batters to the plate and scoring four times to assume a 7-4 advantage.

Garchetti and Crowder both walked. Witting drilled a single to left center driving in Garchetti.

A pitching change for New York; Al Brennen (LP 1-3 6+ innings 8 hits 6 earned run 3 walks 7 strikeouts) was replaced by Emmett Romo.

Elmer Griesinger's grounder to second got Crowder home. Woodie Leiber drilled his 4th of the season scoring Wittig ahead of him for a 7-4 Florida lead.

Garchetti hit his second of the season (solo) in the 8th. 8-4 Florida
and Spencer hit his second of the game and 5th of the year in the 9th to make it a 9-6 Final.
