Florida 5 St. Louis 4

Post by basilrathbonejr »

The Florida Stingrays defense has been charged with a league leading twenty two errors which led to seventeen unearned runs also tops in the league. However over their last ten games the Stingrays have been charged with only two errors and no unearned runs a much better result that coincided with the team beginning to win and move up in the standings.

The Stingrays defeated first place St. Louis 6-5 in game one but it was St. Louis who took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off right handed starting pitcher Larry Thomas (WP 3-1 3.68 ERA 8IP 4H 2R/2ER 3BB/6SO) on the first of two homeruns hit by Jesse Pyle. 1-0 St. Louis.

Florida got their offense in gear in the 3rd inning scoring two runs off losing pitcher Curt Caldwell (3-3 6.1IP 4R/4ER 5BB/4SO). Caldwell walked the lead off batter, Jeff Garchetti. Philip Crowder's single to center field sent Garchetti to third base with no one out. Leslie Wittig lofted a sacrifice fly ball to deep left to get the tying run across. Griesinger followed with Florida's second hit of the inning, a single to center. Gonzalez' two out single sent Crowder to third base. Mike Norman;s run scoring single made it 2-1 Florida.

Florida added on a run in the top of the 6th when catcher Mark Turner hit his 5th of the season. 3-1 Florida. Then Jesse Pyle hit his second homerun of the game in the bottom of the 6th to put it at 3-2 Florida.

Top of the 7th; Giesinger walked after Wittig had walked and was caught stealing. Griesinger did steal second base successfully and he scored on Gonzalez' RBI single.

Jeff Garchetti hit a solo homerun off relief pitcher Whitey Mohler to extend the lead to three runs; 5-2 Florida.

Thomas gave way to the dependable Henry (#16) Downing for the 9th but Downing had a little trouble securing the last three outs. Bill Lavalliere walked. Pena flied to left but Cecil Miller beat out an infield dribbler and Hal Mickens doubled in two runs. 4-3 Florida with just one out. Chris Jones ground out to second moving the tying run to third base with two outs but Downing got pinch hitter Chris Jones to bounce to first base.

It was the 3rd save for Downing.
