Stingrays sweep first place St. Louis

Florida 5 St. Louis 1

St. Louis is now 19-12, one game in first, and 5-5 in their last ten games. The one time cellar-dwellers are now on a steady rise up through the standings going from 6-16 nine games behind St Louis to 13-17 six games out in 6th place.

Alvin Briles, 5-11 196 lb right hander from Dorris, California, made his sixth start this season for Florida and went an effective 7.2 innings limiting the Stars to no runs three hits and two walks, with five strikeouts.

Florida struck for a run in the first inning off right hander Paul Baldwin. Jeff Garchetti singled to begin the inning. Garchetti stole second and third base (9 for season), then scored on a single by Leslie Wittig. 1-0 Florida.

The Rays hammered Baldwin hard in the 4th inning scoring three times. First baseman Wally Brito doubled to center field. Speedy Gonzalez walked and Woodie Leiber hit a three run homerun, his 5th of the year giving Florida a 4-0 lead.

Briles ran out of gas with two outs in the eighth inning ad gave upo a double to pinch hitter Jim Lee. Jim Coffman came in and gave up a run scoring single to Jim Putnam before getting the final out of the inning.

The Stingrays added a runner in the top of the 9th off Steve Mackiewicz. Woody Leiber singled and stole second base Nate McGinnis singled Lieber to third. McGinnis stole second putting runners on second and third base. Jeff Garchetti singled in Leiber.

Arlas Little picked up the save (#2) when Eugenio Diaz walked the only two batters he faced.
