Pittsburgh ends Florida winning streak...Stingrays take rubber game of series

Pittsburgh took game two of their series with the up and coming Florida Stingrays 5-1 with Jim Williams (2-1). Williams put in 6.2 innings allowed seven hits one earned runs walked one and struck out six. Pete Smith picked up his sixth save in the 9th inning. Larry Terwilliger took the loss (1-3) went 7.2 innings allowed 11 hits and three runs, only two were earned, walked three and struck out three.

The unearned run given up by Terwilliger was the first in-earned allowed by a Florida pitcher in the last fifteen games.

Frank Zito hit a two run homerun to ice the game in the 9th inning.

Stingrays 5 Pittsburgh 4

The Stingrays were outhit 12 to 11 in the game but outscored the Ponies 5-4 to take the rubber game of the series.

Juan Escobar went 6 innings allowed 8 hits two runs both earned two walks five strikeouts. Jim Coffman came in out of the bullpen to pitch two scoreless innings, the 7th and 8th, and Henry Downing took care of the 9th for his 5th save.

Florida took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning.

Lead-off batter Jeff Garchetti dropped a Texas League single into short center field to start the rally. Phillip Crowder drilled a single past the glove of diving first baseman Hoyt Severeid. Garchetti went to third on the Crowder hit. Leslie Wittig hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Garchetti.

Pittsburgh tied the game in the 5th on Dick Wasden's solo homerun, his 3rd.

The Rays took the lead in the bottom of the 5th. Adkins walked third baseman Jamie Powell. Escobar bunted him to second and was retired 3-4 for the first out. Garchetti (raided his batting average to .400 in this game) hit his 4th homerun driving in Powell ahead of himself for a 3-1 lead. Right fielder Ted Wasinger robbed Crowder of an extra base hit with a great diving catch for the second out. Leslie Wittig singled to left field and Woodie Leiber doubled in Wittig for a 4-1 Rays lead after five innings.

In the Pittsburgh 7th pinch hitter Phil Curd singled to center field, stole second and that brought Jim Coffman in to pitch. Slattery went out 5-3..1 out.

Dick Wasdin doubled to left field Curd scored (4-2).

Coffman got the third out with no further scoring and pitched a scoreless 8th inning.

Wally Brito hit his 5th of the season for a 5-2 lead.

Henry Downing had some problems nailing down the win in the 9th. Downing walked Jake Jones. Doug Slattery singled and Wasdin who already has a homerun and a double, doubled for the second time driving in Jones and Slattery but Crowder's throw from deep left center field nailed Wasdin at the plate for the second out. Downing struck out Bill Villegas to end the game. (save number 5).

These posts are probably better suited for your league's message board. The "Check This Out" link is meant for showing people throughout the entire SimDynasty site something amazing, like 12-RBI games, 23-game winning streaks, perfect games...
