Yeah I have seen the chart. I am just saying you don't want a noodle arm behind the plate.WillyD wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2023 12:41 pmArm doesn't affect improvement chances though. Range supposedly helps though. In my experience 1B and 2B convert to catcher better than OFers. Not sure about SS or 3B.
Anyone try to convert a 26 (OS 27) yr old to catcher?

The chart doesn't show the difference. It just says VH for all. This is one of the hidden parts of the game.Glug wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2023 12:46 pmYeah I have seen the chart. I am just saying you don't want a noodle arm behind the plate.

I am almost always converting a catcher in my minors. The only thing I care about is the Arm. They must be able to have an A or A+ arm or it's not worth it for me. Every single catcher I have tried to convert has converted. I am converting an Outfielder as we speak. After 3 years he is half way there. He's an outfielder and it's been 3 years. Sometimes it takes 4 years and other times it takes 5 or 6, but they usually will get there if you are patient. The biggest issue is when they get to the majors because it takes a while to get from 50 to 100 and there are growing pains during that time. If you get them to 50 and you aren't going to promote them then go ahead and let him keep developing as a catcher. The closer to 100 as you can get before you promote him the better. My current starting catcher is a converted catcher.

To me the goal isn't to convert them but to convert them by their age 24 season so you can bring them up and maximize their other improves.pecker247 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 02, 2023 7:48 pm I am almost always converting a catcher in my minors. Pecker is right, get them as close to 100% as you can. If your promote a 50% catcher, it's going to be 4 long years of bad CS%, with the first couple seasons being absolutely pitiful no matter the arm skill level. A 100% catcher with a B+ arm will throw our base runners better than a 80% catcher with an A+ arm. Even better than a 90% one.
Re: Anyone try to convert a 26 (OS 27) yr old to catcher?
Just to clarify, I've also converted a number of guys to catcher, and agree 100% that it's a long process. I've always done it with teenagers, and, anecdotally, it seems they did better with conversion rates in their early 20's than in their teens, but it took awhile, including time in the majors.
The question though, was about starting a conversion at a later age; in this case, OS 27, which I agree is too late to work. But is there a cutoff? Has anyone started a conversion with someone who was, say, OS 23, and had success?

I picked up this LF off of waivers during his age 22 season and started the catcher conversion the final 22 games of that season. He converted 5 in age 23 and 5 in age 24 to get him to 50% for C eligibility. He got 2 more in age 25 and I eventually ended up flipping him for win-now pieces.
Not bad for a former 4th round pick and waiver pickup!

Just keep him on the trade block (he appears to be a more than decent player)...and trade him for a catcher. Or look at your leagues' depth charts and see who might need a 2B/3B that has a catcher you'd like on your club. Seems like that would be much expedient.
Best of luck either way.

I actually play in a league you need 80% to be a catcher. I was bored and let this guy go and he converted so well at 22 I had to get him there.

Goddamn, ratmann44!
What an amazing player Ben Hearn was! I don't think I have ever seen anything even close to that in my eleven years playing Sim Baseball! i am curious: what made you convert Ben at the beginning?
Thanks for the story...
