Boston sweeps New York to hang on to a one game lead over Oakland

Post by jimbowie »

The New York Rockers have been to the playoff twice in the previous two season both times as the American League Wild Card team. They won the World Series last season defeating the San Francisco Giants in six games. This season has been a complete disaster for the team that now has a 25-35 record in last place having lost six in a row after getting swept by Boston.

A two time playoff team always has some pride and the Rockers went toe to toe with the Red Sox for the entire series, especially game three. Al Everette and Steven Wilson, the starting itchers were both outstanding. Everette went seven innings for Boston and was charged with one run on four hits. He walked four and fanned four leaving trailing 1-0.

Wilson worked into the seventh inning giving up no runs on three hits in six and one third innings. He walked five, a big problem for him in this game, and only struck out one.

Wilson got out of a jam in the first inning thanks to his defense when he walked Guy Zimmerman with two outs. Zimmerman tried to score from first base on a double by first baseman Randy Thornton to left field. Left fielder Neil Young made a perfect throw to the plate to nab the sliding Zimmerman for the third out of the inning.

Both teams left six runners on base in the game, most of that in the early innings. Some good dfense helped out both teams in keeping the other off the scoreboard.

Boston turned an unusual double play in the third on a bunt attempt. Pitcher Steven Wilson put down a bunt that was fielded by third baseman Justin Leach who threw to shortstop Gene Cole whose relay to second baseman Randy Rajsich covering first completed the play.

New York returned the favor in the fifth inning. Rockers third baseman Jimi Hendrix started a 5-4-3 twin killing with no outs that help Wilson get through the inning.

New York scored a run in the eighth inning. It was the Rockers' only lead of the series. Everette began the inning by walking the first batter Neil Young. Ray Giannelli replaced him.

Pinch hitter Frank Zappa struck out as Zappa stole second base and was in scoring position for Kim Thayil to drive him in with a base hit to left field.

Robin Trower took over for New York in the top of the ninth inning. Trower walked Justin Leach with one out and catcher Weldon Suder hit his seventh homerun of the season, and second in the series to put Boston in front 2-1 and closer Bill Dorish converted his 25th consecutive save on his 19th straight scoreless appearance to nail it down.
