2214: Wild Card Winners

Post by ballmark »

ptech will be covering the National League, where our two big SYL regular season winners were this year.

I'll cover the American League, where our only new postseason entry appeared as the Titans surprised everyone by jumping into the playoffs with a quicker rebuild than many saw coming and winning the American League with 98 victories, the most they've had since joining the league nine seasons ago and **40** more wins than last year. Wowsers!!

The Twins won 96 times, and though it was a three year low for them, they still finished in the playoffs for the eighth year out of the last nine, an impressive accomplishment! They went on to win four out of five in the ALCS to move on to the World Series for the third straight year and defend their World Championship. They have a ring on each hand and are shooting for a third.

(See above or below for ptech's write up on the National League and World Series report.)

WON-LOSS VARIANCE FOR THE REST OF US:
Cleveland = +19 ... surprise challenger for playoffs in '15?
Atlanta = +5 ... very surprised they fell short of playoffs.
San Francisco = +5 ... rebuild showing signs of life.
Arizona = +3 ... second straight year of gains.
Pittsburgh = EVEN ... coin flip with Texas for #1 draft pick.
Milwaukee = <1> ... was most improved last year; had higher hopes this season.
Texas = <1> ... honestly outperformed my expectations this year.
Washington = <6> ... time to rebuild?
Seattle = <8> ... was a +8 last year; thought they'd contend this season.
Cincinnati = <12> ... uh oh, second straight year of negatives.
Baltimore = <14> ... haven't seen musial55 logged in since end of November; I'm worried.
Boston = <22> ... ouch! Lineup looked better than this.

Over in the senior circuit, the playoff race came down to the last handful of games, where in the end 3 games separated 1st from 3rd. The Smog made the post season for the 8th time in the last 9 years, after just missing out in 2213. Philly joined them in the NLCS, making the playoffs for the 3rd consecutive season. Last years NL Champ, Atlanta, missed out on the dance by a mere single game, despite having the SYL's best run differential (seems like some bad luck, they'll be back in 2215 with a vengeance).

As far as the BATTLE OF THE SECOND PLACE TEAMS!!!!™, Los Angles and Philadelphia engaged in an entertaining 7 game set, with no team winning two games in a row. This was a real back and forth battle. Sadly, the series ended with a whimper. Philly took their sixth title (and first since 2199) in an anything but a nail-biter 9-2 win. This breaks NYA’s streak of WS victories at two. As the great Ronnie Lott once said “there’s no such word as threepeat”.

Max Corcoran took home the series MVP with a sterling 1.06 era/1.24 whip & 18k's, to go along with his 2-0 record, which included a complete game victory in the series clincher.

On the losers side, Neil Williams was brilliant, with a 1.62 era/0.96 whip and 14k's.

There were zero, none, no, nada, bubkis, nooooope, batting standouts. This is what one would expect when the leagues two best pitching staffs face off.

The Titans fan base is tortured with wonder as they lost their All-Star left fielder Chuck Dunlap to injury in the last week of the season. Only to then lose their backup left fielder Vic Vanglider the very next game!! The Titans were left with a platoon of 44 (!!!!) year old George Macha and 40 year old Mike Laxton to cover left field duties. Needless to say, ownership is demanding some trades to make additions to the backup role.
