2215 Last Minute Round Up

Post by ballmark »

Last year it was LA-Philly-LA-New York and this year two of those teams made a good run for it but fell short while two of the teams that fell short **last** year jumped up into the playoff picture this year.

Our high-water regular season mark was set by Eli's Philadelphia Knuckleheads with 109 wins. That ties the mark he set three years ago, but not the franchise record of 126 (set back in 2199). It's their fourth straight playoff year. The squad landed five on the All Star team but lost in a tough NLCS six game series to go home and cause management to announce a rebuild this off season. One that's already begun.

Their opponent was the Atlanta Braves, with 102 wins - two less than last year, when they finished third - but this year it was enough to get them into the postseason and from there, on to the World Series. They managed to roster seven All Stars, including the NL MVP and Cy Young Winner. They are back in the playoffs after a two year hiatus.

Over in the American League, Los Angeles and Baltimore tied with 93 regular season wins each. For the Twins, it's their ninth playoff year in the last ten, an impressive feat! (And quite possibly the lowest win total for this franchise to ever make the playoffs.) Baltimore - like Atlanta - is back after missing out the past two seasons. They jumped back into the playoffs after winning only 79 games last year. Nice comeback! The Twins could claim six All Stars, the AL MVP, Fireman of the Year, and Rookie of the Year while Baltimore had but two reserve All Stars and a pair of ROY runner-ups.

Los Angeles won home-field advantage in the ALCS by virtue of winning more games against Baltimore during regulation play, but that did them no good as the Breeze got that "Underdog Mojo" working and were triumphant in a six game series.

In the World Series, it looked like Atlanta was going to make a cake walk of the affair, but then Baltimore began to fight back by taking their final two home games and Game Six at "The Ted" in Atlanta, forcing a Game Seven. Sadly, Baltimore's 37-year old Tommy Madison was no match for Atlanta's Cy Young winner Sean Newcomb (though the game was close until the Braves broke it open in the eighth inning). And so the Braves win their 13th franchise SYL Championship. Congratulations, Stephen!

WON-LOSS VARIANCE FOR THE REST OF US:
San Francisco = +16 ... most improved team of the year!
Texas = +10 ... smoke and mirrors; rebuild just starting, really.
Pittsburgh = +7 ... rebuild showing some flickering signs of life.
Milwaukee = +4 ... hovering around even; playoff candidate in '16?
Boston = +2 ... was a -22 last year. Huge improvement. Still miles to go.
Seattle = +2 ... I keep waiting for this team to compete; window closing?
Cleveland = EVEN ... thought they would challenge this year. Maybe 2216?
Arizona = <1> ... itsy bitsy setback; the rebuild marches on.
Cincinnati = <5> ... third straight year of franchise declines. Worrying. They look better!
New York AL = <8> ... radar blip. They'll be back. Big time.
Washington = <17> ... last year I asked if it was time to rebuild. Ahem.
Los Angeles NL = <23> ... things may get worse before they get better. Or they may be back.
