Another Late League Writeup: 2208

Post by ballmark »

How the day does slip away from me. Mercy.

Well, the best news this year is that Leonard decided to renew. Other than that, we have - for the first time in five years - the same four ball clubs returning to the postseason as we did last year.

The Heatwave melted just about everyone in the SYL, winning 122 games during regulation play. It tied the second highest win total the franchise had ever achieved in its 153 year history! Arizona has hit 126 wins twice, and 122 wins twice, with 2208 being the second time. It's a +14 margin over last year. And they scored double digits in three out of their four NLCS victories. The team was clearly on some sort of mission this year.

Sticking in the National League, the L.A. Smog was our next highest regular season winner with 108 Ws, a +8 for Johnny's squad, in the playoffs for the fourth year in a row. Sadly, they have yet to make it past the first round before being booted out of the postseason competition.

In the Junior Circuit, Todd's Twins - also in L.A. - topped the American League for the second year in a row with 103 victories, six fewer than last year, but more than the team usually garners in making the playoffs. They would go on to sweep the ALCS.

That broom would sweep through the Washington Nits, who rounded out our playoff picture with 101 wins, two off their pace of 2207. They went to the World Series last year, but had to watch from home this year.

The World Series went to six games. The Heatwave held their own at home, but the Twins took two out of three in their home yard to send the series back to Phoenix. In Game Six, L.A. actually outhit the Heatwave, who additionally committed two errors, but with the tying run on first base in the ninth and two outs, Twins 2b veteran Ed Samuels popped out to right field to end the game and send Arizona to champagne showers. Samuels, a full "A" player, had hit .368 in the ALCS, but just .077 in the World Series. A shocking hero/goat performance that will haunt him all winter.

REST OF THE LEAGUE WON-LOSS VARIANCE:
Baltimore = +9 ... leaps over Boston for next AL challenger?
Cleveland = +7 ... the rebuild begins to bear fruit
New York AL = +6 ... see Cleveland
Philadelphia = +4 ... three straight years of positive variance!
Pittsburgh = Even ... but this is a huge step up over last year's <15>
Texas = Even
Atlanta = <1>
Boston = <6>
Cincinnati = <7> ... two years of negatives. Ulp.
Seattle = <8> ... still rebuilding
San Francisco = <9> ... and the rebuild begins.
Milwaukee = <10> ... I got nuthin'. Arizona whupped two other clubs worse.
