2209 Looked A Lot Like 2208

Post by ballmark »

The same four teams finished at the top of the standings in 2209 as 2208. They won three more games this year :arrow: 437 versus 434 between the four of them with the AL making up the difference. Hmmm, I wonder, does that give them the edge in the Series? I guess we'll know soon enough.

The Arizona Heatwave are your regular season victors with 117 wins. That's five fewer than last season for Connor, but enough to finish with a comfortable six game lead over the Smog in L.A. The Heatwave claimed the Rookie of the Year, the MVP, and about 33% of the National League All Star team. It's their fourth postseason in a row, and fifth out of the last six seasons. They were looking to get back to the Series for a third straight title.

The Smog in L.A. won 111 times in 2209, the most in three seasons and suffered a season-ending spate of injuries that sent them on a Bundy-rant to psych up their clubhouse and that must have worked because they cooled off the Heatwave in a relatively short five game NLCS to move on to the World Series. Wow! They can claim the National League Cy Young winner and about 25% of the NL All Star Team. This is their fifth straight postseason appearance but the first time they've made it all the way to the World Series.

The Twins in southern L.A. are your American League winners once again, for the third straight year, with 106 victories. It's the third straight year Todd has won more than 100 games with this team and it looks like it's becoming a habit. The Twins could claim the Fireman of the Year in the American League, and seven of the 25 All Stars on the squad in midsummer.

John and his pesky Washington Nits once again rounded out our playoff picture for the third straight year and fourth out of the past five. The Nits won 103 games, the same total as 2207, and were hoping to move on as they did then, but were denied this year as the ALCS turned into a home-and-home affair with each team winning in their home ballpark with the series running out to the full seven games. Washington claimed the ROY with 31-year old Japanese LF Keiji Enomoto, the AL MVP, and matched the Twins with seven All Stars.

It's an all West Coast World Series with the two L.A. clubs duking it out mano-y-mano. The only sure bet is the SYL will have a new Champion once the dust settles.

WON-LOSS VARIANCE FOR THE REST OF US
The National League looks like it might be fun to watch next year!
Atlanta = +15 ... Wow! And they had the All Star SP. New NL challenger arises!
Boston = +11 ... Nice rebound after last year's <6>
Seattle = +8 ... the rebuild shows some progress.
Baltimore = +5 ... 2 straight years of positive variance. In playoffs next year?
Philadelphia = +4 ... **four** straight years of positive variance. Sneaky contender!
Milwaukee = +3 ... nice rebound from last year's <10>
Pittsburgh = +3 ... nice to see them on positive side of ledger
Cincinnati = <4> ... three straight years of negatives; see the Trade Desk
Texas = <5>
Cleveland = <10> ... woops, rebuild takes a step back
New York AL = <14> ... see Cleveland; this is also what I said last year, hah!
San Francisco = <19> ... rebuild has begun in earnest

Strange season in Knucklehead land. Started off very slowly. We were 13 under at the start of July, and then went nuts for 40 games, climbing all the way to 11 over...and then we stunk it up for the last month. PHI ended an even 81 up and 81 down.

The most .500 that ever .500ded.

I also started very slow. Went like 40-7 after 60 or so games. We finally got the monkey off our back.
