LCS Playoff Review

Post by ttreese »

Just for fun, here's a quick summary of the LCS. Feel free to add to it. Quite a playoff season.

In the NL LCS Montreal arrived as an early odds favorite to advance to Third World Series in 3 consecutive seasons based on a strong pitching staff (1st overall in league) and a solid offense (2nd overall in league). San Diego, a recent newcomer to the playoffs had a solid year posting rankings as 7th in Hitting and 5th in pitching in the league. The series went a full seven games with SD winning in the 12th inning of game seven. It was a tight series as Montreal scored 21 runs and SD scoring 19 runs. Haley lead Montreal posting a .400 avg in the series while 2B Meier led SD with a .355 avg in LCS. Tom Burroughs led the SD bullpen posting 2 saves over 6 IP with 0 ER. Dominating performances. The underdog SD Kings advance to their first World Series.

In the AL LCS; both Texas and Washington were strong teams as Washington finished the season with the 2nd best pitching staff based on ERA and the 4th best offense based on avg. Texas had the 3rd best P staff and led the league in hitting based on avg. Washington was the favorite having won 18 of the 24 regular season games between the two teams. Douglass and Armstrong paced Washington respectively with Douglass hitting .346 in the series with 5 RBIs and Armstrong hitting .333 with 2 HRs. Washington posted a .210 avg in the series with 5 HRs and 21 runs scored. Texas posted a .256 avg in the series with 4 HRs and 30 runs scored led by Brent Butler who hit .407 with 1 HR and 4 RBIs. The aces for both teams were strong but clearly the dominant pitcher was Washington's Foster who was 2-0 with a 1.10 ERA over 16.1 IP. His counterpart Lawton acquired expensively during the season posted a 2.77 ERA which wasn't bad but not up to par with Foster. Another tight series that came down to final game seven. Texas, seeing very few weak links with Washington, focused on throwing right handed pitchers in the final game. In an unconventional move; RP Briggs was moved into starting game seven having never started a game all season. Briggs stepped up only giving up 2 ER over 5 IP which set the stage for SP Torres who came in relief and posted 4 innings of shutout baseball only giving up one hit. Keeping Washington's explosive offense at bay (Washington led the league in HRs), Torres and Briggs put Texas in their 5th World Series appearance in 8 years. Quite a game, quite a series.
