Lottery Queston
TEX - How is the lottery set up? I noticed on last seasons' set up that some teams have more number chances to win than others.
Re: Lottery Queston
I was just informed the playoff teams 1st two picks get pushed back to the end of the 2nd rd? I was told this was an anti tanking league. Doesn't that encourage tanking? Gives losing teams more top picks. And with my situation, 0-9 on the road vs MIN, it would behoove TOR to tank to not make the playoffs so not to lose their first rd pick.

Re: Lottery Queston
This is for picks 1-24 in the draft.
000-049: 16th place (5% chance to win)
050-099: 15th place (5% chance to win)
100-149: 14th place (5% chance to win)
150-249: 13th place (10% chance to win)
250-349: 12th place (10% chance to win)
350-499: 11th place (15% chance to win)
500-649: 10th place (15% chance to win)
650-749: 9th place (10% chance to win)
750-849: 8th place (10% chance to win)
850-899: 7th place (5% chance to win)
900-949: 6th place (5% chance to win)
950-999: 5th place (5% chance to win)
The way the lottery works is, whatever number is drawn in the NY Midday Numbers draw on the day of the LCS, that team wins the lottery. The next team after them (so if 13th place wins, then 12th place) gets the 2nd pick in the draft.
After that it reverts to the normal draft position, so the worst that the 16th place team could pick is 3rd overall.
Playoff teams get picks 25-32
First two teams out get picks 25-28
Loser of WS gets picks 29-30
Winner of WS gets picks 31-32

Valid point. Most teams with a chance to get to the playoffs know that anything can and usually does in a short series. So you go for it because a title is cool and the 12th pick you'll likely get won't be so fabulous. For a 5% chance, tanking isn't a great strategy. Nor does being awful set you up well for the top pick. So that discourages tanking to the bottom.wearewolf wrote: ↑Thu Feb 22, 2018 8:21 am I was just informed the playoff teams 1st two picks get pushed back to the end of the 2nd rd? My team is just awful. I'm not doing it on purpose. Lol.
Re: Lottery Queston
If TOR/WAS comes down to 1 game for a playoff spot, which is possible, then 1 win/loss could mean, on average, TOR getting 7th and 19th overall pick or 27th and 28th based on 1 outcome. Seems to incentivize losing?

Re: Lottery Queston
What is the reasoning for taking away playoff teams picks? I could see taking them out of the lottery where they stay 13 - 16.

Re: Lottery Queston
I think that is a good point. Maybe we could change that and it would make the first and second rd draft picks for the playoff teams a little more valuable for trading purposes.

100% on board with that. I think it would be good for everyone, and the rebuilding teams don’t get screwed either if they trade for a pick and it becomes a playoff pick.
If enough people agree we should vote (probably needs to be unanimous?)

Re: Lottery Queston
Chicago AL would be okay with that. I agree that playoff picks are seldom worth anything but moving a pick from a potential #25 to #13 ... well, now, you may be on to something.
In fairness, I don't think the intent was to punish an owner for doing well, I think it was probably to give the weaker teams (especially if they didn't win the lottery) another little leg up.
At the very least, we could look at moving the LCS losers up to the end of the first & second rounds, with the World Series teams remaining at picks 29-32. That would be a decent compromise, if it came down to it.

Re: Lottery Queston
There will be a formal post coming in the next 1-2 days that has far more specifics around the entirety of the draft process. I forgot how involved it can be. I've literally got a 2 page word document detailing everything.
Once everyone has a look, we can vote on things. I've included reasons for why things are the way they are, such as playoff teams being out of the lottery.
Before we consider changing that up, I'd like to caution for a moment that while keeping playoff teams out of the lottery seems like it really handicaps successful owners from continuing to compete by acquiring prospects, the primary reason for it is to create parity by curbing long playoff runs.
I'll be honest... if I had a top 16 draft pick every year, I'm fairly certain my 6-10 year playoff runs would become 12-15 year playoff runs. Food for thought.
