Realignment

Post by Cueball899 » Sat Nov 03, 2018 8:27 am

This was posted by Chris in the FHFL in the old forums back in 2015. Towards the bottom of the list in the NFC South is CAR. I assume CAR is Carolina but the FHFL dosen't have Carolina as a choice to move to. The FHFL has tier 4 cities allowed. Should we have Carolina as an option or was it put on this list as a mistake?

Found in Old Forum.

Below is what Chris wrote on realignment

Okay, here's how it works:

First, the league is split into conferences. Basically, looking in this order, the first 16 teams that match this list go to the AFC, the rest to the NFC. I've also listed the "preferred divisions" for the teams (not all teams have one):

LAA, West
NYA, East
BC
OAK, West
HOU, South
IND, South
JAX, South
KC, West
TEN, South
SD, West
MIA, East
PIT, North
NE, East
DEN, West
BUF, East
BAL, North
CIN, North
CLE, North
PHX
MIC
BR
CHA
SJ
CAL
NEW
SYR
EDM
PRO
ORL
LV
SHR
SAS
VIR
POR
TUL
TOL
ARK
SA
FLA
BIR
NOR
MIL
LOU
OMA
BRO
NAS
SAC
NJ
HAM
ROC
HAR
BOS
MON
WIN
MEM
COL
DAL, East
TOR
CHI, North
CAR, South
ATL, South
DET, North
PHI, East
MIN, North
NO, South
SF, West
SEA, West
ANA, West
STL, West
TB, South
GB, North
WAS, East
ARI, West
NYN, East
LAN, West

So the top 16 teams on this list are guaranteed to be AFC, the bottom 16 are guaranteed to be NFC, and the ones in the middle will go either way depending on how the list fills up. But if someone wants to guarantee being in one conference or the other, they can do that by picking one of the top 16 or bottom 16 cities.

Before we go into divisions: The only teams with division preferences are those that won't automatically fall into place with a 32-team league using the default geography. So not all teams have a "preference".

Next, divisions are picked. Imagine each division having a "team captain" picking team members on a schoolyard. The AFC goes first, and picks its teams round-robin: West, then East, then North, then South. It asks the database for the next team that fits the following criteria:

- Team not already assigned to a division
- Team has a preference for this division
- If team doesn't have a preference for this division, check to see if it doesn't have a preference for another division
- Find the team with the closest matching geography

So let's say the AFC consists of NYA, TEN, SD, MIA, PIT, NE, BUF, CLE, PHX, SJ, SYR, ORL, LV, SAS, POR, and TUL. West picks first; SD has a preference so it goes to West. East picks next; there are four teams with preference for East but NE is farthest east so that's where it goes. North picks next. PIT and CLE both have preferences for North, but CLE is farther north so it is assigned to North. South picks next; TEN has a preference for South so off it goes.

Next round: West goes; no teams left with a preference so it gets POR. East still has a preference so it gets NYA. North gets PIT, South has no teams with a preference for South so it picks a team without a preference, the farthest south is ORL.

Next round: West takes SJ. East gets its next preference, BUF.
North is out of teams with a preference and takes SAS. South takes the next southernmost team, PHX.

Final round: West gets LV, and East gets its final preference, MIA. North gets SYR, South gets TUL.

So if the teams at the offseason are the same as they are now, the AFC will be:

West: SD, POR, SJ, LV
East: NE, NYA, BUF, MIA
North: CLE, PIT, SAS, SYR
South: TEN, ORL, PHX, TUL

I'll leave the NFC as an exercise for you. :) But to answer your question, DET and CHI will definitely be slotted into the North. For locations that are "statewide" like FLA or MIN, the location on the weather map is what is used for geography (pretty much where their NFL stadium is/was).

This is fixed. For some reason, Carolina had tier 11 in the database. Pretty sure I meant to set 11 as the default helmet and somehow clicked the wrong thing. That explains why site-wide there is only one team in Carolina.
