Jeff Hammer, SD Catcher in Twilight of Career

Post by radicalhapa »

Taking a moment to appreciate Jeff Hammer, long-time catcher for SD Revolucionarios. At 38 he doesn't have much future as a starter, but made the most of this season. Picked #6 ahead of future HOF Catcher Franklin Talcik who went to St Louis in the R2 at #29, Hammer was always the lesser of the two catchers. A one time all-star, five time gold glove winner, Hammer was steady and the rock for a decade of excellent SD pitching.

In their 16th season, Hammer hit a career high .319 with an .898 OPS but only in 350 AB. SD doesn't have an heir apparent yet as they traded young Amore Dubois to Seattle who is going to be tearing it up there.

Hammer keeps pounding in the playoffs, hitting .438 and starting all 6 LDS games vs StL. Franklin, who now plays RF, hit .273.
