Spite & Luck: The Story of Champ Saunders

Post by bobbum2 »

Unbeknownst to probably the entire league, the Anaheim Royals made a move in the middle of the season, claiming long-time San Diego Toxicity star Champ Saunders from the Waiver Wire. With only a Long Relief role available, and plenty of arms in the minors awaiting a call-up, management went with Saunders instead.

But not for the reasons you might expect.

While Anaheim had already started the year strong, there was no guarantee they'd be able to stay atop the standings with Detroit, Texas, and Chicago all nipping at their heels. This did not sway the management from seeing an opportunity: one to be considered both spiteful and hopeful. While brining in Saunders gave them hope his veteran leadership (along with 4 World Series Titles) would potentially bring them some luck in the playoffs, the idea of bringing in this former Star from San Diego would create a beautiful narrative should Anaheim go on to win the World Series. A World Series that would helpfully be won over the San Diego Toxicity.

And while the dream matchup didn't happen, a whole new world of events followed. San Diego, while playing strong throughout the season, had a full melt-down in the final month and went on to miss the playoffs entirely. The team that leap-frogged them wound up in the World Series. And Champ Saunders was able to contribute to the team that took a flyer on him after his hometown, the team that drafted him in the second round, the only team he'd ever known, had released him on waivers.

In his career, Champ had secured 5 All-Star Team Selections, and appeared in the World Series a whopping NINE times in his TEN playoff appearances. While he got very little playing time on the Anaheim roster, his involvement still contributed to the Anaheim Royals 2220 World Series Victory, and he locked up his FIFTH World Championship title. And after the dust settled, he made the decision to hang up his cleats.

When all was said and done, management came forward to congratulate Champ on helping this Royals team stick it to San Diego just a tiny bit, because I'm petty and never imagined it would have worked out so perfectly.

Ha ha!
