Chicago 3 Arizona 1

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

The Chicago White Sox competed their first road trip of the season a disappointing 2-4 which cost them first place. Thy surrendered that spot to the red hot Arizona Sunburn (10-2) who put together an eight game winning streak during the same time Chicago was on the road. That streak came to an end when Colorado defeated them 2-1. The only Arizona run came on Isidro Stearnes 5th home run of the season.

Chicago began this series obviously knowing its importance despite it coming early in the season. ''Starting pitcher Bill Rohden said as much ''We have to get the ship back on course, We lost three straight ball games so yeah its big for us.

Rohden responded as a true ace would do, by going eight inning, giving up one run on five hits. Rohden struck out six and walked just one. He is 3-1 for the season with a 2.05 ERA.

The Chicago pitching staff ERA of 2.89 is no longer the best in both leagues. The Texas Banditos of the American League have a staff ERA of 2.87 which is now the top figure.

Amos Otten picked up his legue best 8th save with a scoreless ninth inning. Otten allowed one hit, a two out single to Rick Sheldon, who was the hitting star for Arizona. Sheldon stole second base but Ken Davis flied out to John Golden in right field to end the game.
Sheldon doubled in Arizona's only run in the fifth inning. John Galle singled to start the firth inning, scored on the play.

Sammy Splittorff hit a two run homerun for the White Sox in the second inning to put the hometeam in front 2-0.

After Arizona has scored its run in the 5th, Chicago added on a run in the seventh inning and a couple of pinch hitters came through to make it possible. Pinch hitter Dennis Tomer walked with one out and pinch hitter Randy Duggan double to deep left field to drive in Tomer.

Harvey Guthrie (2-1) who went seven innings allowed three runs on nine hits, two walks three strikeouts took the loss.
