Chicago-Houston Series

After losing the season opener at home to New York 6-1, the Chicago White Sox have rebounded with four straight wins.

Afer taking two of three from New York to open the season the White Sox began a series with the Houston Flood.

White Sox starting pitcher Erik Lancelotti tossed eight shutout inning allowing Houston on two hits, walking one and striking out five.

Lancelotti allowed a two out single to John Ordenana in the second, two out walk to Paul Kaiserling in the fourth inning and a two out single by Eddie Freeberg in the seventh. All three wereleft on base.

Chiucago scored two runs on six hits in the game and scored both runs on three hits in the first inning off hoiuston starting pitcher Sean Gibson (0-1). Pete Vargus singled and stole second base, then he stole third Randy Duggan drove him in with a single to right field.Shortstop Sammy Splittorff singled to right fieold.. Duggan stopped at third base.

John Golden reached on an error by second baseman Charles Gonzalez. Duggan scored the second run on the play.

Gibson took the loss but pitched well. He went 7.1IP 6H 2R/1ER 1BB/7SO.

Chicago 8 Houston 6


Game two was a higher scoring affair.

Chicago scored eight runs on ten hits and did not have an error while Houston scored six runs on eight hits and made two more errors which let in two unearned runs.

Houston starting pitcher Jeff Moyer did not last long, only two innings giving up nine hits and eight runs, six of them earned, walked one and struck out one. Carl Smith (4IP) and David Jelincich (2IP) allowed only three hits the rest of the way.


Chicago jumped on Moyer in the first inning for four runs on five hits, plus a walk and an error.

Duane Lansing singled, and stole second. Larry Schrenk doubled, driving in Lansing.

Pete Vargus singled home Schrenk. Sammy Splittorff singled...Vargus was thrown out at third base on the play by center fielder Tom Reitz to third baeman Frank Bochter.

Splittorff stole second base. Catcher Chuck Brown's throw to second base went into centerfield for an error and Splittorff went on to third base.

John Golden walked and Thad Winert doubled in the third and fourth ruuns of the inning. Splittorff and Golden).

The Sox added two more in the second inning on a RBI singles by Shrenk and Splittorff for a 6-0 lead.

A pair of two homeruns in the third inning csnceled each other out erving only to make the score 8-2 Chicago.

Chappy Graffe hit one for Houston and Randy Duggan homered for Chicago.

Houston scored four times in the 7th inning to cut into Chicago's lead.

A two run homerun by Mike York, the second hit off Milt Kelly in the game brought in Bernie Papai. Papai retired the first two he faced then gave up a double to pinch hitter Dick Reynolds and another double to Gaffe. Chuck Brown followed with a run scoring isngle before Jim Belcher came in to get the final out.

Belcher also pitched the 8th inning before leaving for closer Amos Otten who picked up his fourth save with a scoreless ninth inning.
