Chicago Sweeps Houston

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

Chicago swept Houston with a 5-3 triumph in game three of their series in Chicago. New York and Arizona are both 4-2 and one game behind Chicago.

Chicago won its fifth straight after losing on opening day with a 5-3 victory over the Houston Flood. Chicago scored 23 runs in the series and Houston 17.

Chicago hit .293 and Houston only .161.

Errors played a prominent roll in the outcome of the first two games. Houston committed three errors that let in four unearned runs.

Game three featured a marquee pitching matchup between two of the most talented starting pitchers in the league; Slim Juul of Houston and Rick Frias of Chicago.

However as such duels often go this one did not ever really take shape. Juul lasted just nine hits five runs three walks one strikeout and suffered his second straight loss thus season.

Frias lasted eight innings to even his record at 1-1. Frias allowed five innings gave up nine hits and three runs walked five and struck out three.

Juul walked, Randy Duggan and Sammy Splittorff, the first two batters he faced in the second inning and they both came around to score when Dennis Tomer hit his first homerun of the season. Tomer hit another homerun in the fourth inning to make it 4-1 Chicago.

Houston scored two runs in the sixth inning on single by Chappy Gaffke, a double by Chuck Brown and a single by Eddie Freiburger. That cut the Chicago lead to one run, 4-3.

Juul departed after walking the lead off batter, Thad Winert, in the sixth inning. Winert was forced at second by Dennis Tomer. Tomer came in to score on a infield single by Larrt Schrenk to increase the lead to 5-3.

Amos Otten pitched the ninth inning as he did in both game one and two for his third save of the series and fifth of the season.

Otten worked three scoreless innings gave up no hits one walk and struck out four for three saves.
