ChiSox win ninth straight!

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

The first place Chicago White Sox have now won nine straight games since their opening day loss to New York ad lead the 8-2 Arizona Sunburn by one game. Arizona has won straight.

Rick Frias went nine innings for the Sox. It was the third complete game in the last four games for the Chicago pitching staff. Chicago leads in ERA (2.40), WHIP (0.81), has allowed the fewest hits (59), the fewest walks (3), is third in strikeouts w/80, has allowed the fewest run (24), fewest earned run (24) the fewest un-earned runs (0) and has the most save (6).

Frias (2-0 2.25 ERA) allowed two runs on six hits walked four and struck out eight.

Chicago got him some early runs to make things a lot easier scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Larry Schrenk, the 38 year old centerfielder, acquired from Texas in a trade, had three hits, scored two runs, and drove in three runs prompting his manager Duke White to say after the game ''Schrenk has hit righthanders very well so far (.455), so he will be out there every day unless a leftie is going and that's where he has a few problems (.229 lifetime 1 for 3 vs lefties this season).

Schrenk singled to start the top of the first and stole second base. Pete Vargus drove him in with a single to left field with one out.

Lou Borland walked and Sammy Splittorff hit a three run Paul Keefe (LP 0-3) to put Chicago up 4-0.

Frias struggled a bit in the early innings. In the first inning lead off batter Ed Hollins tripled. Frias struck out Isidro Stearnes for the first out but Bo Skiff hit a ball just deep enough to scored Hollins from third base to cut the lead to 4-1 Chicago.

Frias' other troublesome inning was the 3rd. Pitcher Paul Keefe singled to left field. Hollins grounded a single to center field and Stearnes walked to load the base.

Frias said, ''I was just throwing too many strikes over the plate after we scored four runs. It was an adjustment I had to make and after the third inning things went a lot better.''

In fact Frias gave up just two hits walking three with six strikeouts

The White Sox scored two more runs in the 4th inning. Schrenk was once agan in the middle of it. Randy Dugger singled with one out and Tomer walked. Frias bunted, moving both runners up to second and third with two outs and Schrenk came through with another clutch hit driving in both runners.

Chicago had one more scoring inning, the 6th. Dugger and Tomer both singled to centerfield. Tomer was caught stealingand Frias fouled out to third baseman Rafael Kahdot. Schrenk capped off his big day with a two run triple making the final score 8-2 White Sox.
