September arrives in the 1950 race in Dave Foutz League

Post by basilrathbonejr »

The 5h place Cincinnati Red have entered September on a hot streak winning six of their last seven games to forge a tie for fifth with Los Angeles on a two game losing streak at this point.

The Reds admittedly are a flawed team in need of overhauling their starting pitching and they are willing to part with some prime regular players to do it. Interested trade partners who view the list of players on the trade block and submit air offers to the Reds GM.

The Reds despite their flaws have suddenly begun to play good baseball. Offensively the team has a .262 team batting average that ranks (6th) in he league, the team fielding percentage is at .984, ninth in the league and the pitching staff ERA is a mediocre 4.63.

First place Brooklyn is hosting Cincinnati in a three game series. Game one went to the Reds after a stiff pitching duel between Craig Mele and thirty two year old left hander Matt Matthews.

Mele, a thirty one year old right hander (4=5 3.38 ERA) figures to have a prominent sport in the Reds 1951 starting rotation especially after he fashioned eight shutout innings (five hits 0 runs one walk and six strikeouts) over Matthews who allowed two runs, one earned on nine hits three walks, four strikeouts.

Cincinnati broke the scoreless tie in the 4th inning. Tucker Phelps singled to right field, stole second base and scored on a clutch single by Ray Gordon.

They manufactured an insurance in the 8th sending Mathews to the showers in the process. Newly acquired shortstop Ernie Becker singled to left field, stole second base with one out went to third base on a error by second baseman Preston Hill and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gordon off relief pitcher Rudy Payne for a final of 2-0.
