Brooklyn 5 Arizona 4

Brooklyn 1-0 in extra innings. Arizona fell to 3-3 innings.

First place Brooklyn (43-18 .705 winning pct., reduced its magic number to clinch first place to 14 when the Firebirds put an end to a five game swoon by handing the second place Arizona Patriots a 5-4 loss in ten innings. It was the first extra inning game for the Firebirds this season after 61 games. Arizona dropped their thrid straight.

Relief pitcher Ben (The Vulcher) Manuel (8-1) picked up the win in relief of Matt Matthews who pitched seven innings gave up three runs on five hits for a no decision.

Brooklyn opened the scoring with four runs in the 3rd inning off Arizona starting pitcher Ike Gaines (6IP 9H 4ER 1BB/3SO) Heinz Pena and Hugh Jackson had run scoring singles and Bill King knocked in two more with a double that skipped past right fielder Les Lombardozzi. 4-0 Brooklyn!

Arizona had an answer for that big ining with their three run 7th inning all the runs scoring with two outs.. Joel Richmond lined a double to center field and scored on Blackie Reipschlager's single to right field. Matt Mathews walked three straight batters (Jake Arroyo and Lombardozzi to fill the bases and Jack Pettee to force home a run. Pinch hitter John Turner singled home Arroyo to cut the lead to 4-3.

Lombardozzi walked again to lead off the 9th inning, went to 3rd base on a single by Pettee and scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Wally Collins

Brooklyn came up with the winning run in the 10th inning Chick Fernandez doubled to left field off losing pitcher Joe Aase. Heinz Pena made it a walk off win to end the losing streak with a single to center field.

There were a couple of high scoring affairs in the National League. Los Angeles outscored Houston 10-8 and Colorado crushed Pittsburgh 11-2.

Libe Poulsen got the win in the walk over improving to 7-3. Ben Hopkins was tagged with the loss (7-1).

Colorado had 11 runs on 15 hits. Every player in the game except poulson had at least one hit. Mel Castillo had three and scored three times. Sam Hunter hit his 16th homerun and drove in five runs. Mike Veritek hit his 6th of the season.

Los Angeles 10 Houston 8

Each team had fourteen hits. Los Angeles won the most important categor scoring ten runs on those hits.

Jesse Hudson hit his 10th of the season, a three run shot, and added a sac-fly for Los Angeles, driving in a total of four runs in the game.

Cincinnati 4 Atlanta 2

The Cincinnati Reds won their third staright doubling up Atlanta 8-4. The sixth place Reds are now 28-33 fifteen games out of first but only one behind fifth place Los Angeles.

Cincinnati has been diligently retooling their penetrable starting pitching through one trade and by religiously scaning the aiver wires. The team has been 13-11 over its last twenty-four games.

The Reds have received some stout starting pitching over that span. Wayland Ayala is 2-0, Jack Staiger 3-1, and newly acquired Phil Terry is 1-1.

Mele has been 3-2 over that stretch with a 3.5 ERA was a loser his last time out, but went eight innings in this one, giving up three runs (two earned) scattering nine hits walking three and posting six strikeouts.

John Bowie had three hits in the game raising his batting average to .359, which would rank second in the league behind leader Brooklyn's Bill King's .364 if he had enough at bats.

Atlanta's Charlie Criscola hit a solo homerun (6th) in the 1st inning putting Atlanta in front 1-0.

The Reds had to wait until the 2nd inning before they scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Ray Gordon and Gus Hendrick had run scoring singles in the rally.

Tucker Phelps doubled and scored on Don Knudson's fourth inning run scoring single to make it 3-1 Reds.

One inning later Atlanta starting pitcher Heinie Calvert (LP 0-7) walked fellow pitcher Mele with one out. Bowie sent Mele all the way around to third base with a solid single to center field. Then with two outs right fielder Pete Murphy gave the Reds a run when he dropped Phelps' two out fly ball. 4-1 Reds.

Atlanta scored an unearned run in the 6th when Knudson threw away Olloie Martinez grounder. Marinez went to third on a single by Criscola and scored on a double play (4-6-3). 4-2 Reds.

The Reds added two more in the 8th off reliever Bill Repogle. Phelps singled to start the inning but was caught stealing. Al Lankford singled and stole his first base of the season. That put him in scoring position for pinch hitter Matt Ethridge to single him home with two outs.

Ethridge got the green light to go with two gone and he pilfered second (7th SB for him). Rookie Fred Parker doubled past the desperate dive of first baseman Ollie Martinez to make it 6-2 Reds.

Criscola hit his second homerun of the game and 7th of the season in the 8th to cut the score to 6-3.

The Reds responded with two in the 9th inning. Pinch hitter Jesus Roberge single. Bowie collected his third hit of the game, a triple and he came in on a sac-fly by Phelps.The Reds wnet on to close out the 8-4 win but had to use closer Bobby Zamora on a scheduled off day when Bud Crowley could get only one out in the 9th giving up a run.

Zamora made quick work of it getting Ollie Martinez to hit his first pitch to Lankford at second baseman AL Lankford, who started a 4-6-3 DP to end the game. Zamora now has four saves.
