Cincinnati takes series from Atlanta

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Reds 3 Atlanta 2

The Cincinnati Reds and the Atlanta Thunder , two non-contending teams hooked up in a very entertaining three game series in Atlanta. The Reds took game one behind Craig Mele by a 8-4 score. Atlanta, the cellar dwellers, nonetheless, came back with a spirited 8-4 victory in game two penning the loss on Phil Terry.

That set up a rubber game in game three of the series with Sherm Cuccurullo on the mound for the visitors and Red Zettlein pitching for Atlanta.

Zettlein and Cuccurullo both started out well each retiring the side in order in the first inning.

The Reds had a frustrating second inning running themselves out of a chance to score first. The lead off hitter, Al Lankford, was retired on a grounder to shortstop Luke Jackson. Freddie Parker and Ken Reeves both singled putting runners on first and third. Bad things started happening to the Reds. Reeves was caught stealing for out two. Catcher John Green made a sensational throw to shortstop Luke Jackson who tagged out Reeves for the second out. Rookie Harry Handiboe drew a two out walk putting runners on the corners again. Handiboe was thrown out by Green to end the inning. No runs on two hits and a walk.

That roused the spirits of the downtrodden Atlanta club and spurred them to a rally in their half of the second. Cuccurullo alowed singles to Whit Smith and Luke Jackson to start the inning and hit Israel Schlei with a pitch to load the bases.

The Reds starter did a good job of damage control allowing Smith to score on a sacrifice fly by Tiny , but clamped down on the next two hitters getting Charlie Murphy on a foul pop to third baseman Ken Reeves near the dugout and Zettlein fanned on three pitches to end the inning.

1-0 Atlanta.

Cincinnati scored an unearned run in the top of the 4th to knot things at 1-1.

Phelps flew to right to start the inning. Al Lankford lined a shot off Zettlein's shoe for a single. There was a short delay while the pitcher was checked out and he was deemed fit to continue. Lankford stole third and this time catcher John Green's throw was off line going into leftfield for an error allowing Lankford to score tying the contest 2-2.

The Reds went ahead in the 6th inning. They also lost another runner stealing; Ernie Becker on a good throw from Green to Jackson covering. It hurt because Tucker Phelps hit his 4th homerun one pitch later giving the Reds a 2-1 lead.

Cincinnati added single runs in the 6th and 7th, both runs coming off solo home runs. Tucker Phelps hit his 4th in the 6th and pinch hitter Chuck Thompson hit his 2nd in the 7th to put the Reds ahead a little more comforting 3-1.

Atlanta pushed across a run in the 7th.

Pinch hitter Joe Cruz singled, stole second, went to third on a infield ground out and scored on Greens bouncer to first.

3-2 Reds.

That was all the scoring. Zettlein went 7 innings allowed 7 hits and 3 runs to pick up the loss. He is 3-5.

Bobby Zamora did pick up his 5th save with a scoreless 9th inning.

Due to watching SEC Women's basketball coverage off the other games was not possible.

Tomorrow the big story will be if slumping Brooklyn can hold off Arizona who took two of three from the first place Firebirds.

Colorado shut out Pittsburgh 2-0. Colorado has won six straight nad Pittsburgh has seen its losing skid reach five.

Los Angeles has won five nad is tied with Pittsburgh one game in front of the Reds.

The Reds would like to pass a couple of hose teams before the season ends.
