DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME!!

Brooklyn (47-23) reduced it's magic number to eight with a 3-0 shutout win over Houston.

Bill Herrnstein is 9-4 (T1st) now with a 2.53 ERA (2nd) went eight shutout innings allowing just four hits and one walk with six strikeouts.

Rudy Payne garnered his 9th save with a scoreless 9th ining.

The game was a Scoreless pitching duel between Herrnstein and Earl Nash (LP 5-5). The Firebirds finally broke through off Nash in the 8th when Dave Eave hit his 5th homerun of the season. An infield single by pinch hitter Hugh Jackson was followed by a homerun by Mike Green also his 5th.

Arizona 6 Los Angeles (12 Innings)

Arizona kept pace with the Firebirds with the use of four pitchers. Starting pitcher Adam Rowland went 4.2 innings pitched 7 hits 5 runs and departed bringing on Joe Aase (2.1 innings 1 strikeout), Tony Kane (2 innings 1 walk 2 strikeouts) and winning pitcher Phil Seward (3 innings 2 hits 2 walks 4 strikeouts) to earn his first win.

Joel Richmond and Blackie Reipschlagel each had four hit games. Richmond hit his 3rd homerun of the season.

Reds 6 Pittsburgh 1

The Reds keep playing decent baseball but never can gain any ground on the Colorado, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. The Reds just complete a series with Houston where they dropped the final two games getting outscored in the series 20 to 11.

Catcher Bobby Waslewski hit his first career homerun coming off Art Fernandes (LP 0-4) in the 3rd innnig.

Cincinnati doubled that lead in the 4th inning. Ray Gordon walked and stole second base. Don Knudson stroked a two out run scoring single to put the run on the scoreboard.

Pittsburgh scored their only run in the 6th inning on Jeff Jonnard's 9th homerun of the season.

A three run 8th inning sealed the win for the Reds.

Jack Staiger doubled off Fernandes leading off the inning which brought in Eddie Grady to replace Fernandes. Harry Handiboe singled advanced Staiger to third base and stole second base. Ray Gordon grounded out but drove in Staiger from third. Tucker Phelps doubled in Handiboe. Al Lankford singled in the final run of the inning to make 4-1.

Catcher Matt Ethridge singled, stole second, and scored the Reds final run of the game on a error.
