The Dave Foutz American League standings tightened considerably after the last round of games. One of the three second place teams at this point, Cleveland, knocked of the first place Detroit Wheels 9-8. Baltimore shut out Texas 7-0 and Kansas City picked up a big win for that troubled tram by edging Boston 3-2.

The White Sox dropped their second straight game to Washington 6-4 in the opener of their series. That game was tied 4-4 going into the top of the ninth inning when White Sox rookie right hander Val Brizzolara walked Mickey Smith and Sam McAllestor with two outs and Pat Burgess singled in Smith with McAllester going to third on the play. Jim Holmes, the hitting hero for Washington with four hits collected the final of those to drive in his second run of the game giving the visitors a 6-4 lead.

Winning pitcher Willie Mercedes completed a two inning relief stint to earn his third victory of the season.

Game two....

George Hesketh put a stop to Chicago's two game skid going eight innings giving up seven hits and two runs, both earned. Hesketh walked one and fanned five to improve to 5-1 on the season with a 2.38 ERA.

Newly installed closer Steve Batista picked up his third save with a scoreless ninth inning.

These two teams will complete their series with Jimmie Dilhoeffer (0-2 4.15) going against left hander Joe Causey (0-0 7.36)
