Chicago 4 Boston 1

Chicago finally surpassed the .500 after several tries with a well pitched 4-1 tilt with the Boston Hammers on a cool Thursday night in Bean town. Jonathan Schroder allowed five hits and one run over eight innings, walked one and struck out ten.

Chicago took a quick lead in the top of the first inning on Joel Hambright (3) two out solo homerun off Dave Stone (LP 1-3). After Schroder gave up a lead off single to Butch Carey in the bottom half, he got a fly out and two strikeouts to show everyone in the park he was going to be a handful.

Chicago followed up the run scoring first inning with two more runs in the top of the second. Boston starting pitcher Dave Stone put himself in a bind by walking the first two batters; Vicente Lebron and Ed Farmer. A weak ground ball to first baseman Orville Mauriello advanced both runners. Mauriello also fielded a grounder by shortstop Pat Palyzinsky that scored Lebron. Pitcher Jonathan Schroder singled to left driving in Farmer.

Boston got on the scoreboard in the 7th inning off Schroder.

Mauriello singled to center field and stole second base. After a fly out by Art Distel, Herm Outen, a constant pain for the Sox, singled softly in front of hard charging left fielder John LaPointe.

Schroder recovered and struck out the next two batters to quell the rally.

Charlie White singled with two out in the 8th for Chicago and scored the final run on Joel Hambright's groundball single to center field.

Steve Batista continued his good roll as closer finishing off another game for his 6th save.

Boston is now 17-16 four games behind Detroit.
