Detroit 5 Boston 4

10 innings

Detroit improved to 3-1 in extra innings

The streaking Cleveland Marauders continue to put the pressure on front running Detroit and the Wheels have begun to roll a bit in response by winning their last two straight games to hang on to sole possession of first place by one game.

Detroit took a 5-4 road victory in Boston. The winning run was provided by Mauro Norton's solo homerun off relief pitcher Nick Bell (LP2-3).

The game was tight highly contested throughout. Detroit took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 4th on a RBI single by George Kelly.

Boston tied the game 1-1 in their half of the 4th inning. Pete Rusch hit his first homerun of the season off Detroit starting pitcher Jim Iorg.

A two run homerun by Mauro Norton and Pete Brookins' run scoring single gave Detroit a 4-1 lead.

That was not enough as Butch Corey's three run shot to deep left field in the 8th tied the game 4-4.

Norton provided the last inning heroics with his homer and Steve Williams came in for his 11th save.

Carlos Raliegh (2-0) got the win in relief. (1 inning 0 hits 0 runs)

Cleveland 4 Kansas City 2

The Marauding Marauders of Cleveland stormed to their eleventh straight win with a come from behind 4-2 decision over last place Kansas City. It was the fourth straight loss for Kansas City.

Cleveland scored single runs in each of the final three innings to come from behind and edge the Athletics 4-2.

Cleveland tied the score 2-2 in the 7th inning on a lead off homerun by Bud Sessi (6th).

Ken Restelli put Cleveland in front one inning later with a one out doubled driving in Jim Clemons who had also doubled.

Jack Lee provided and insurance run with a run scoring single off Chris Mercado and Mike Buddin (save #12) save another game for Cleveland.

Washington 3 Baltimore 2

Baltimore 5th inning...Mark Blackburn hit a two out two out two run homerun off Mel Flynn to start the scoring. 2-1 Baltimore.

Washington tied it 2-2 of a sacrifice fly by Steve Reynolds. Sonny Cole, who singled and went to third base on a single by
Bob Duffie, scored.

Duffie seized the moment later when he hit a walk off homerun in the 9th to put Washington in the win column.

White Sox 3 Texas 2

The Chicago White Sox have quietly begun to play their way into the equation in the American League picking up their third straight win and their fifth win in six games. They are four games behind Detroit but the trouble on this day was all the clubs in front of the also won.

Texas has lost two straight nbow and seven of ten to fall seven games off he pace.

Chicago's third straight win was another product of good pitching, White Sox ace George Hesketh, 6-1, won for the fourth straight time going 8 innings allowing five hits two runs and recording six strikeouts with one walk.

Hank Nelson got the call in the ninth inning giving Steve Batista the game off. Nelson responded by picking up his first save.

Chicago scored their first run in the first inning off Texas starting pitcher Bobby . Charlie Durbin doubled and Joel Hambright singled in the run.

In the second Ed Farmer singled, stole second and Chip Barbieri snapped out of a season long hitting draught with a run scoring single. 2-0 Chicago.

Texas knotted the game 2-2 in the 6th thanks in part to some sloppy play by the White Sox. Hesketh hit pitcher Bobby Smith with an 0-2 inside pitch to put him on base. Catcher John Merritt allowed a pitch to get by him for a passed ball moving Smith to second. Truck West and Ovid Ward followed with consecutive doubles before Hesketh got the final two outs to stop the rally.

The Sox broke the tie in the op of the 9th. John LaPointe walked with one out Ed Farmer doubled scoring the go-ahead run.

Hank Nelson pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.
