The sixth trade over the season in the league, (5th involving the Cincinnati Reds) was completed on September 16th between the last place Reds and the first place Anaheim Patriots. The Pats received center fielder John Bowie (.279 3 Hrs 19 RBI 17 SB) and first baseman Johnny Javier (.193 5 Hrs 14 RBI) in exchange for minor league 23 year old second baseman Steve Shinners, veteran Willie Higgenson, and center fielder Joel Richmond (.269 3 32 RBI 8 SB).

Reds recaps;

Red 2 Los Angeles 0

The Reds are on a modest two game winning streak after Jack Staiger (5-6 3.46) went 7.2 shutout innings limiting Los Angeles to four hits.

Bobby Phillips stranded two runners in the 8th when he got Rusty Bowles to line out to Al Lankford at second base.

Bobby Zamora completed the shutout with a scoreless 9th for his 16th save with help from left fielder Israel Schlei who made a sensational diving catch on the warning track that robbed Jesse hudson of extra bases.

Ten game winner Hi Tartabull was saddled with his fourth loss of the season despite going eight innings giving up seven hits and two runs.

The Reds took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning when catcher Mike Hardy hit his 3rd homerun of the season with one out.Tartabull, 10-4 with a 2.24 ERA has surrendered 9 homers this season and opponents are hitting just .210 off him.


The Reds bunched three hits and a walk together in the 6th for their final run. Tucker Phelps led off with a single but catcher Carl Wilson gunned him out stealing. Don Knudson reached on an error by Tartabull who then walked slumping first baseman Johnny Javier (.196) and gave up a run scoring single to leftfield to Al Lankford.

Reds 3 Phantoms 1

The Reds returned to the friendly confines of Crosley Field, in Cincinnati, to host the Pittsburgh Phantoms. The hometeam got another great outing from a starting pitcher. Craig Mele lasted eight innings, gave up four hits and one run walked three and struck out seven before giving way to Bobby Zamora who garnered his 17th save. Mele is 8-5 with a last place team.

Joe Barrett's first inning homerun, his 5th got the Reds on the board quickly and Mele held hat slim lead for five innings before slugger Dick Partenheimer drove his 13th of the season out of the park in the 6th. Partenheimer ranks 5th in the NL in homeruns.

22 year old third baseman Don Knudson hit a two run shot for the Reds in the 7th that put the Reds in front for good. It was Knudson's 6th of the season.

The bad news for the Reds; Knudson strained a quad late in the game and will be lost for a week to ten days.

Final 3-1 Reds.

Arizona 6 Los Angeles 1

First place Arizona sent second place Los Angeles down for its second straight loss blistering the Jumpers 6-1.

Blackie Reipchlager hit his 15th and 15th homers in the game and drove in four of the six runs. Reipchlager is second in the NL in homeruns behind Colorado's jack Dykhoff (17).

Alex Flood got the win. Flood, 8-2, went eight innings gave up four hits, two runs, only one earned, walked one and fanned an impressive nine batters.

Bill Adamson closed it out to pick up save number 19 on the season. Ron Dammann (4-8) was the losing pitcher.

Arizona, 38-29, leads LA by one game now.

Houston 2 Brooklyn 1

Defending National League champion Brooklyn fell to 34-33 four games out after dropping a 2-1 decision to the Colt.45s.

Houston scored both of their runs in the first two innings. Tony Mussina singled in a run in the 1st and Jake Sommers SF in the 2nd got the final Houston run home.

Ray Hartzel improved to 5-7 going six innings allowing just one run on one hit with one base on balls and eight strikeouts. Hartzel took a no-hitter into the seventh that was broken up by a lead off double by Mike Green who scored on a single off releivef George Washburn by Hugh Jackson.

Carl Brown took over in the 9th and picked up his 9th save,

Colorado 7 Atlanta 6

Home Runs came in abundance in this game; Luke Jackson hit his 9th in the 3rd and Tom Boyle (1st) in the 6th for Atlanta. Bob Spahn hit a three run shot for Atlanta in the 5th, his 12th.Pete Murphy had a two run triple for Atlanta in the 4th.

The big five run 5th for Colorado overcame a 6-2 Atlanta lead, Colorado sent ten batters to the plate. Sam Archer had a run scoring double and Bob Taylor and Paul Dunston added RBI singles knocking out Atlanta starter Heinie Calvert.

Del Stein. his replacement gave up two more runs on run scoring singles by Tommy Scheib and Tom Boyle.

In Cincinnati, the Reds send one of their hittest stating pitchers, lefthander Wayland Ayala, to the mound in game two with Pittsburgh to opposed right hander Scott Phillips 5-4 3.48. Ayala, 5-3 with a 3,46 ERA has won his last three outings, a stretch in which he has compiled a 2.13 ERA in 25.1 innings giving up 6 earned runs with 27 strikeouts and walking 8.
