Boston 1 Detroit 0

''Don't look back -- Someone may be gaining on you.'' -- Satchel Paige.

For Detroit Old Satch's advise is a day late because the Boston Hammers who have been hammered with regularity of late rose up and smacked first place Detroit with a wet noodle to win 1-0.

Jim Stubing (2-2) did the heavy work spinning the Wheels for eight and a third scoreless inning limiting them to a paltry four hits. Stubing walked two and fanned three.

He tired in the ninth and Jeremy Jelic got the final two outs for his sixth save.

Boston scored the game's only run off losing pitcher George Lombardi (4-3) in the first inning after there were two outs. Joe Benge singled and Lew Russie doubled.

Detroit had a single by Larry Souza in the first inning, two singles in the fourth inning by Hector Collins and Nyls Roznovsky and a lead off single in the 9th by Souza. Stubing walked Finch in the 2nd and Collins in the 6th but never allowed the Wheels to break through and score.

Kansas City starter Jimmy Burke allowed the games first run in the first inning on a lead off single by Rick Kuiper and a double by Ken Restelli. Then in the second they added a second run on a two out single by Eric Colavito.

Pete Robidoux's solo homerun for Kansas City in the second inning cut that lead in half; 2-1.

Clevleland forged ahead 4-1 in the 3rd inning on a two-run homerun by Restelli who had three hits and three runs batted in in the game and scored twice.

White Sox 3 Texas 0

The White Sox won their fourth straight (19-16) to pull within three games of first place. The White Sox have won seven of their last ten.

The Sox began the scoring in the 3rd inning. Charlie Durbin walked with no out, John Merritt forced Durbin at second, for the first out, Vicente Lebron singled with two out. Gary Secrist drove in Merritt with a single to right field. Ricardo Wells pinch hit for pitcher Hank Nelson in the ninth and was walked by Art Duncan.
