Colorado 18 Arizona 8

First place Arizona was blown out by Colorado 18-8 giving them a big win that put Colorado in a second place tie with Los Angeles. Arizona has been 6-4 in its last ten games but has managed to whittle its magic number down to three.

Colorado pounded out nineteen hits and scored fifteen runs while Arizona had eight runs on fifteen hits. Arizona's starting pitcher Doc Johnson was knocked out of the game in the second inning (1.2 innings six hits six runs, all earned). Six relief pitchers trailed him and none were effective.

In the second inning Tom Boyle crushed a Johnson fastball out of the park for a grand slam, his 8th homerun this season which gave Colorado a 6-0 lead. Mike Varitek (13th) and 2b Bob Taylor hit two two-run home runs (his 2nd and 3rd of the season) Taylor also a lead off triple and scored a run in the 4th giving Taylor four hits, five RBIs for thirteen total bases in the game for Taylor.

Atlanta 11 Colorado 10

Atlanta has been a rejuvenated team since the ownership change. The Fury took the win in a slugfest with Colorado.

Colorado actually had more hits that Atlanta (14-10), but were outscored where it counted most on the scoreboard. Both teams committed one error.

Joe Stark hit his 3rd homerun, a three run shot, in Atlanta's five run 1st inning. Stark went on to have five runs batted in during the game a two run single in the 5th inning.

Steve McAuliffe (11th) and Daryl Jackson (6th) homered for Los Angeles.

Pittsburgh 7 Brooklyn 3

Ron Polly won his 10th game of the season to put his season's log at 10-5 with an eight inning performance in which he surrendered six hits and three runs.

Joe Schmidt had a four hit game scoring two runs and right field Steve Battle drove in three runs with two hits in the game including his 15th homerun.

Preston Hill hit his 13th for Brooklyn.

Reds 3 Houston 2

12 Innings

Cincinnati is closing out the season on a high note having won a season high four straight games after pulling off their first sweep of the season against Houston, one of those games went extra innings.

Te Reds improved to 4-8 in extra innings by winning their second straight extra inning game. The Reds scored the contest's first run in the bottom of the second inning.

First baseman Willie Higginson led off the inning with a ground rule double, stole third (his 5th stolen base since being acquired from Arizona on September 16th and he then scored on a grounder to shortstop by Mele, the starting pitcher. Mele was robbed of hit by Jack Smith.

Houston turned things around in the 6th inning. Smith singled to right, Bobby Goulait singled to right and Mele then walked Jim Lesher to load the bases.Scott David singled past third baseman Don Knudson to put Houston ahead 2-1.

The Reds tied the game 2-2 in the 7th inning knocking Houston starting pitcher Ray Hartzell out of the game. Hartzell walked the lead-off batter in the inning Joel Richmond and hit Knudson with a pitch putting runners on first and second with no outs in the inning.

George Washburn replaced Hartzell. Joel Barrett lined a one out single the scored Richmondd tying the game.

Mele pitched nine of the games twelve innings giving up ten hits and two runs, both earned with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Bob McAleese struck out two of the three batters he faced in the 10th and he handed over mound duties to Bobby Phillips, the winning pitcher (3-2) who went two innings for the win when the Reds scored in the bottom of the 12th inning.

Reeves singled with one out off loser Bob Woodall. MacKenzie walked and Tucker Phelps doubled home the winning run.
