Arizona 6 Colorado 2

The first place Arizona Patriots took game two of their series with their closest pursuer to reduce their magic number to clinch first place to one. A sweep of the series will clinch it for the Pats.

Ike Gaines (9-7) out pitched Nat Fuentes (7-3) in a matchup of two quality pitchers for the victory.

Gianes went eight innings scattered four hits while giving up two earned runs, walking three and recording three strikeouts. Clint Spencer did not retire either batter he faced to start the 9th inning, but Bill Adamson came in to put out the fire to earn his 24th save.

Arizona scored two in the 4th on a two base fielding error on Colorado center fielder Sam Auker and three runs in the 6th inning/ In the 6th Blackie Reipschlager doubles and scored on a single by Bill Dauer. Dauer scored on a single by Charlie Pena. John Bowie drove in Pena with the third run.

Colorado had homeruns by Mel Castillo (10th) in the 2nd and Mike Veritek (3rd solo) in the 8th.

Reds 3 Houston 2

The Reds nailed down their 5th straight win, their longest winning streak of the year. This club has already traded away its top two draft choices and has no reason to just play out the season even if there was a mind to.

The Phantom Phantoms lost to Brooklyn 5-2. Brooklyn's Bill Herrnstein (10-5) went 7.2 scoreless innings allowing just two hits for the win. Preston Hill and Chick Fernandez hit homers allowing the Reds to catch the Phantom.

The Reds have been getting very good pitching for a good stretch of time.The team ERA has shrunk to 3.81. Cincinnati made use of four pitchers in this game. Starting pitcher Wayland Ayala (6-4 3.52) went 6.2 innings, allowed two runs on five hits. Ayala left after allowing a wo out double to Pete Rivera in favor of Bob McAleese who struck out Hersh Jackson to end the 7th.

Tony Mussian hit a solo homer for Houston in the second inning and War Groskloss and Jim Lesher hit doubles to produce the second run. 2-1 Houston

The Reds scored a run in the 1st ining off Ed Nash.

Rookie Steve Shinners singled, stole second (first career steal) and scored on a double by Tucker Phelps.

The game was decided in the Reds half of the 6th inning.

Former All Star Joel Richmond singled, but was caught stealing. Knudson doubled, went to third base on a ground out by Willie higginson. Rookie Overton Gomez singled in Richmond and was then thrown out stealing to end the inning.

Phil Baney got the win (1-0) who worked the eighth inning got the win when Bobby Zamora closed out the 9th inning gettin Joe Leitner to hit into a double play started by thrid baseman Don Knudson to second baseman Jim Barrett to Higginson at first.
