Detroit 5 Chicago 1

The White Sox saw their five game winning streak come to an abrupt end at the hand of first place Detroit. Chicago outhit Detroit 10-7, but left seven runners on base and hit into three double plays. The first to stymied two possible productive inning and the last brought the game to its conclusion.

Harry Anderson got the Wheels rolling in the first with a two-run homerun off Chicago starter Jonathan Schroder who dropped to 5-3 this season.

The lead ballooned to 4-0 in the 6th inning on a two run double by Pete Brookins.

Schroder went just six inning allowed five hits and four runs gave up three walks and had six strikeouts.

The only Sox run came in the 8th inning. Charlie White singled and Joel Hambright doubled him home to make it 4-1. An add on run in the 9th drive in by Souza made the final 5-1.

Steve Williams came in with two on and no one out in the ninth and got a pop up and a game ending double play to post an impressive 13th save.

Game two...

Washington moved into a tie for first place with its 8th straight win. The Bass dropped Cleveland 8-6 to deal the Marauders their third straight loss since their winning streak ended.

Cleveland dropped to two games out in third place only one game in front of fourth place Chicago.

Chicago evened up its series with Detroit at one game each with a tough well played3-2 win over the battle hardened Detroit Wheels.

Willie Mohart, a hot starter of late, started and again pitched well, even though he did not figure in the decision. Mohart went seven inning allowed nine hits and two runs did not walk a batter and recorded four strikeouts.

John Merritt's second inning homerun (6th) off Whelan put the first run on the scoreboard.

Bert Hennessey hit his first of the season in the third for Detroit to tie the game 1-1.

Detroit to a take a late 3-2 lead in the seventh inning. George Kelly and Pete Brookins both singled putting runners on first and third with no one out. The pitcher, Tom Whelan, singled in Kelly. 2-1 Detroit.

The 8th inning was good to Chicago. Pinch hitter Patrick Palyzinski, batting for Jake Smith, with one out singled off Whelan. Charlie White collected his first hit of the game, a single to center field which brought Whelan's efforts to an end and left hander Jerry Tarmargo on to replace him.

Charlie Durbin greeted him with a shot over the third base bag past Norton fair into left field. Palyzinsky scored the tying run. White stopped at third as Detroit got the ball back into the infield very quickly. Merrit, an RBI machine drove in his 26th run of the season with a routine ground out to second base.

Chicago 3-2.

Batista picked up his 9th save but a pair of outstanding defensive plays by shortstop Chip Barbieri helped him out. First Barbieri robbed Dwayne Novotny of a hit going into the hole to field a hot shot and throwing him out at first and then the shortstop leaped high in the air to spear Kelly's line drive.

Third baseman Ed Farmer threw out Brookins to end the game.

A pair of outstanding right handers George Hesketh (6-1 2.36) and Jim Iorg (2-1 3.3.24) will hook up in the rubber game of this series.

Hank Nelson got the win, as the veteran reliever has put together a good streak out of the bullpen (1 ER in his last five appearances with a win and a save), pitched a scoreless eighth. Chicago came from behind with two runs in their half of the eighth to take a 3-2 lead.
