The Cincinnati Reds have done everything seemingly possible to improve their team enough to make it a contender and to see it off to another sluggish amplified by yet another sub-five hundred start were desperate for some wins going into their six game homestand with Arizona and Los Angeles.

The Reds took the first two of three from the Patriots but dropped game three 5-1 with Craig Mele sufferin his fourth straight loss going only six innings allowing five hits, four walks, and four earned runs.

Cincinnati took game one against Los Angeles.

Winning pitcher (2-1) Phil Terry gave the Reds an outstanding start going 7.1 innings (four hits no runs two walks nine strikeouts). Terry left after Frank Conroy and Tim Nahorodny had consecutive two outs singles in the eighth. Ray Hooper came in to get the final out of that inning and turned things over to closer Bobby Zamora in the ninth. Zamora was not particularily sharp giving up one run on one hit and a walk before securing his seven save this season.

Cincinnati took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 4th inning on doubles by Tucker Phelps and Rudy Jutze and a two run homerun by catcher Mike Hardy.

Neither team scored again until Los Angeles nicked Zamora for a run on one hit and a walks plus one strikeout before securing his 7th save.

3-1 Final.

Game two

The Reds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 4th when Tucker Phelps homered leading off the inning off losing pitcher Kurt Thomas.

The Reds added two runs in the 6thJ oe Barrett and Phelps stroked one out singles and Don Knudson was hit by a pitch loading the bases Skip Jutze singled in Barrett and Phelps with a line drive to right field.Knudson scored on a ground out by Mark Redfield and Jutze scored the fourth run of the inning on a single by Mike Hardy.

Jack Staiger (3-0) carried a perfect game into the 5th inning before walking Rusty Bowles. Staiger induced the next batter, Amby Parsons, to hit into a double play and thus had faced the minimum going into the 9th inning when Al Vargus singled breaking up the no hitter and Carl Wilson ruined the shutout with a two run homerun.

Bobby Zamora took over and allowed no runs on one hit in getting the three final outs for his eighth save. Zamora has saved eight of the Reds ten wins this season (80%).

Brooklyn at 14-0 holds a one game lead over Los Angeles who has now lost two straight. The Firebirds edged Houston 4-3 in game one of their series. Dean Combe got the win to go 2-3 on the season.

Hugh Noonan hit a solo homerun leading off the 7th and Chick Hernandez a two run double off losing pitcher George Washburn that put Brooklyn in front 3-1.

Game two Bill Herrnstein went nine innings allowed seven hits and one run (four walks and six strikeouts) taking advantage of fourteen hits and ten runs. Brooklyn socred four runs in the fourth ining.

Jayhawk Batsch had two hits and three runs batted in in the game.
