Revisiting 1989 Hall of Fame Class

Post by ballmark »

Given the guidelines just discussed, these players are now re-nominated for the Goose Goslin League Hall of Fame:

1b Tony Alfredo, New York Titans
20-year career with New York-NL, Boston, a flirt with Chicago-AL, and a final few years in Cleveland. Nomination criteria: 9 All Star teams, 3 Gold Glove Awards, 300+ SB, 2500+ Hits. Now 75 years old, owns a chain of toy and hobby stores in the greater New York area, managed by his sons.

2b Tommy Behenna, Boston Red Sox
14-year career with New York-NL, Boston and Detroit. Nomination criteria: ROY Award, .816 OPS. A flamboyant player, drafted late in life for a rookie, died at 73 in Sim2024. The family did not release the cause of death.

SP George Butcher, Washington Phantoms
16-year career with Washington, Cleveland, and quick flirtation with San Diego and Detroit at the very end. Nomination criteria: ROY Award, 2500+ K, 1.30 Career WHIP. Butcher died at age 67 in Sim2020 of a heart attack after a baseball card autograph session.

LF Lou Charles, Washington Phantoms
18-year career with Washington, Chicago-AL, and the final few years in Cleveland. Nomination criteria: AL MVP in 1983 when Washington won the World Series. 6 All Star teams, 3 Gold Gloves, .806 OPS, 300+ HR. He just passed away a month or so ago (May, Sim2026) after a long battle with lung cancer at the age of 75.

2b Dave Culloton, Washington Phantoms
18-year career with Washington, Milwaukee and one last hurrah with Cleveland. Nomination criteria: 5 All Star teams, 4 Gold Gloves, 300+ SB. Dave passed away quietly in his sleep in Sim2020. He was 69.

3b Ed Locklin, Milwaukee Mad Cows
17-year career, all with Milwaukee. Nomination criteria: MVP in 1986 when the Brew Masters won the GGL World Series. 7 All Star teams, .800 OPS, 300+ HR, 300+ SB, 2 Gold Glove Awards. Locklin died from a fall at his home in Sim2022 when he was 70 years old.

CF Chucky Mathis, Washington Phantoms
14-year career, all with Washington. Nomination criteria: 5-All Star teams and 300+ SB. Now 73 years old, collects vintage movie posters and hopes to one day sell them to Mike and Frank on an episode of "American Pickers."

SP Brian McAllister, Los Angeles Youngstuds
16-year career with Kansas City, Brooklyn, Chicago-NL, and Cleveland. Nomination criteria: Cy Young Award in 1986 w/Cleveland Curve, 2,500+ Ks and Career WHIP of 1.28. Died of cancer in Sim2015. Chose to retire w/Cubs cap but that franchise is now Youngstuds.

VOTING RULES:

• With 15 active owners, 7 votes must be cast (a quorum) for this ballot to be labeled official. At least half of the votes cast in favor of a player shall be considered sufficient to elect to the Hall. So that means a player can make it in with as few as 4 votes. If 9-10 people vote, you gotta have 5. If all 15 of us vote, a player would need 8 votes to make the Hall.

VOTING WILL BE OPEN UNTIL THE END of the DRAFT CLASS IS REVEALED: SimSEPTEMBER 1.

My ballot:

Lou Charles
Not a solid first year candidate, but I'm hoping to keep him on the ballot, if possible.

Oh, I forgot to mention  any player that receives at least two (2) votes will remain on next year's ballot. A player is eligible for three ballots (instead of five because we don't have the patience of the real world in the Sim).

I wound up staying late in town and am at a hotel and it's too late for me to keep working on SimStuff ... so I'm going to hold the vote open a couple more days and do the inductions and write up on Friday, when I have a day off.

But the vote is OFFICIAL and we do have a couple new members to the GGL Hall of Fame.

Nice work, gentlemen!!
