Did You Know?

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

The term ''white elephant'' is defined in the dictionary as a ''possession that is useless, or troublesome, especially one that is expensive to maintain, or difficult to expose of.''

This was the term was used by the New York Giants manager John McGraw to refer to reporters in reference to the new team acquired by majority owner Benjamin Shibe, a Philadelphia manufacturer, in 1905. Connie Mack, the teams part owner and manager defiantly took the term as the team mascot and at the start of the World Series that season presented McGraw with a toy stuffed elephant. McGraw accepted graciously.

It was not until 1909 that the team actually started wearing a white elephant on their uniforms. The white elephant was retired in 1963 but brought back in 1988 and recently could still be seen on uniform sleeves of the Oakland A's.
